Pictures of Erich Bärenfänger

#1

Post by Tim » 25 Apr 2003, 13:50

Just wondering if anyone has any pictures of Erich Bärenfänger? I have seen several portraits but not too many other photos. I would also be interested in hearing about information on him, other than the generic biographical summary. Thanks!!

Erich Barenfanger was awarded the Knights Cross with Oakleaves on 17 May 1943 while serving as 3rd Battalion commander, 123rd Grenadier regiment, 50th ID on the Russian Front.

He first enlisted into military service on 16 October 1936 with assignment to Infantry Regiment 67 and was commissioned as a Leutant d. Res. three years later. Virtually al of his service was with the 50th Infantry Division, going from platoon leader to battalion commander. He was promoted to rank of Oberstleutant on 1 January 1944, skipping the rank of Oberst and became THE YOUNGEST ARMY OFFICER to be promoted to the rank of Generalmajor on 20th April 1945

He was also the 45th recipient of the Knights Cross with Oakleaves & Swords

Actually, I had another look at the Third Reich Factbook's information on Bärenfänger and it mentions, "After a failed breakout from a celler in a ruined house, by the Underground-Station Prenzlauer Berg - he committed suicide (01 May 1945)". I must have overlooked that part when I last read it.

Anyone have any pictures?

Thanks for the picture Paal, I haven't seen that one before. I had not heard of his wife committing suicide either, very interesting. Hopefully someone has more information regarding this.

Thanks again!

Bärenfänger has a whole biography written on him, even in your native language!

Siegfried Stichling & Karl-Otto Leukefeld
"Generalmajor Erich Bärenfänger" Ein Lebensbild
196 pages, 37 pictures, Osnabrück 1994

You can buy it directly from the publisher Biblio Verlag for some EUR 30,-
Try their internet site.

Hi!

I found this on some internet sites:
Als am 1. Mai ein letzter, verzweifelter Ausbruchsversuch seiner Kampfgruppe scheiterte, wählte Bärenfänger in Angesicht der russischen Verfahrensweisen mit hochdekorierten deutschen Offizieren – zusammen mit seiner in Berlin lebenden Ehefrau - den Freitod.

Thanks Sven and Paal!! It's good news about the book, though I'm not a native speaker of German. I wouldn't be able to get through the book in German, so hopefully it'll be available in English. Which site did you find the information regarding the suicide of Bärenfänger and his wife, Paal? I didn't come across that site.

Thanks!!!
