I will have to join now. There were two other generals of german origin in the Romanian Army:

Schmidt Carol (1886-1962)
Schwab Hugo (1887-1944), suicide 1944

Is there a chance that you can provide pics of them, too.

Now that was a wonderful pic of Phelps in Romanian I have never seen that before.He was a very fine general and is much overlooked.Thanks a lot

Stauffenberg..ah I don't think I will be able to keep that ratio.I do have a work to attend to... But I used a lot of the Sunday for "hunting".. and you just beat me to it btw.I found that pic of Schwab 14 days ago I think I actually saw a pic of Schmidt 3-4 weeks ago,it was a group picture from the memorial site of the Iron Guard,which is filled with pics and very fancy..one has to have the nerve to listen to a lot of pompous music though including what I believe was a Romanian version of Horst Wessel.. Unfortunately or fortunately the whole site is in Romanian so it was impossible for me to tell if it actually was Schmidt....and no I did not book mark the site.but as I recall I got to it by typing in "carol Schmidt" in google but I think the full name of Sima will have the same effect.Strangely enough it seemed to be a membership site but I had no trouble watching the pics and try to get a meaning from the txt..you could try that rather worthless piece of info...

Otherwise I was in luck I did find some pics I hadn't seen before incl.Rendulic in Austrian uniform,but I guess you have seen that?...but it brings up another question because I read your old post about generals crossing to the wehrmacht after Anschluss.

and I was thinking of Julius Yllam of whom I sadly only have a civil pic (one in uniform would be much appriciated... but I have never been able to find any info if he made the cross over too which I doubt he did not even as an honorary col.Do you or anyone else have that info (or pic)

During my little hunt yesterday I did find this pic of Karl Gustav Sauberzweig wearing a fez commanding div.Handschar.You have probably all seen it before but this is what I usually refer to as a rather funny pic.I had only seen it in a book before.

Oberst Julius Yllam did not transfer into the Wehrmacht. He was retired on the 15th of March 1938 and died in Klagenfurt on the 15th of January 1942.

and while we are on this subject I know Otto Schöbel transferred a pic of him in Austrian uniform would be much valued..as with Alfred von Hubicki in Austrian uniform

and I know that Edmund Glaise-Horstenau did held an active command of some kind in the German army..probably as a garrison commander somwhere,but I'm a little uncertain of that and by him it is the opposite I have plenty of pics of him in Austrian uniform but none in German uniform..wonder if such a pic exists?

and finally who can a person in the Austrian army called Karl Moyses be?.I have not been able to find anything about him nor a picture either in Austrian or German uniform,but he is listed in the Austrian OOB for 1936..or is that 1935....is he a spelling error in which case then who can he be .Or is he a long forgotten leftover from earlier days of glory... meaning can he be an honorary colonel or something like that?

Thanks for the pic Gareth and the bio,that was interresting.I didn't know he committed suicide,but I can see that having been a plenipotentiary in Zagreb would have meant that he would have been turned over to the Yugoslavians and that would have sealed his fate anyway.And as always things like this broadens now I will have to begin looking into his time in Zagreb

Generalmajor Karl Moyses, a former Austrian Pionier officer transferred into the Wehrmacht on the 13th of March 1938 and was appointed as the Inspector of Recruiting District Köslin on the 10th of November 1938. Promoted Charakter Generalleutnant on the 1st of April 1939 and to the substantive rank of Generalleutnant on the 1st of February 1941. He remained at Köslin until retiring on the 31st of December 1943.

Here is the biography of Glaise von Horstenau which appears at ABR- rather less detailed than Gareth's, but includes a few additional details (such as his SA affiliation).

On a side note, I've read in several sources that this officer was consistently horrified (as were many dignitaries and officers of the Wehrmacht) by the mass murders perpetrated by the Croatian state. I believe I read too that he protested to higher authority, but do not have specific details of this at hand.

Karl MOYSES (born on 3 October 1882) reached the rank of Generalmajor in the Austrian Army, having commanded the 1st and 3rd Pioneer Battalions and later holding the post of Deputy Commandant of the Theresienstadt Military Academy. He was promoted Oberstleutnant on 27 June 1923, Oberst on 28 June 1934 and Generalmajor on 1 January 1938. As Glenn states, he transferred to the Wehrmacht, being promoted to Generalleutnant, and retired on 31 December 1943.

Glen;So Karl Moyses did exist.how strange I have only been able to find him in one OOB,perhaps because of the Pioneer education..these people are not always listed.And a little different--I read somewhere that you have a web site..I hope it will not be against the rules if I asked you to post a link..I would love to see that..

Michael Miller:Since my last visit here I have managed to read 3 (in quality) varying articles about the Novi Sad Massacre for which Glaise-Horstenau was accused-One of the articles directly mentions GH's complaining over the atrocities..and claims that GH tried to reach the "top" via Seyss-Inquart..not totally unlikely.The 2.article didn't mention GH at all and the 3.rd.which trusth I have to rate low due to some other things in that article.claimed that GH sanctioned Novi Sad..but and this is perhaps the most interesting..after the incident had taken place.....that made me smile a little The SA connection however is very interresting.I suppose he was attached to the SA till the end then.

another thing which actually was interresting,is that he too was a dr.in philosophy.I don't really know why but it crossed in my mind that Oscar Dirlewanger was a dr.in philosophy too...seems to a rather unhealthy study..

VJK:The Pioneer command is of interest.I then suppose gen.Moyses probably was a dr.ing himself.(not unlikely) and I kind of guess that a pic of this until now to me unknown Austrian gen doesn't exist.

and a little personal reflection about Gleise-Horstenau whose political career I seemed to know more about than his military ditto.It has often irritated me when I read references to some of the Austrian Ministers as being NS-The only one who could be qualified as national socialist was Seyss-Inquart.someone like Glaise-Horstenau is probably better characterized as fascist or rigtw wing with fascist sympathies....that was as strict personal view...
