General der Artillerie Kurt Herzog

Herzog was in the Kurland pocket with his XXXVIII. Panzerkorps. The strange thing is, he was senior to Hilpert, Boege, Krosigk and Volckamer who all commanded the HGr or an army in the pocket. Can anybody explain why Herzog was always passed over?

This is from an assessment of him and his performance by Generaloberst Lindemann dated 28.03.1944
"Hat die Allüren eines Grandseigneurs. Durchschnitt."

Average performance as a corps commander and an attitude that probably would not go down well with the HPA in 1944.

Compare with an assessment of Hilpert by Lindemann dated 01.03.1944
"Über Durchschnitt. Nach weit. Bewährung OB einer Armee."

and this by Lindemann on Boege dated 23.06.1944
"Bei weitere Bew. als Kom Gen voraussichtlich zum OB einer Armee geeignet."

I don't think Herzog made the HPA list of possible army commanders.

Regards

John

Thank you for this very interesting insight. There was a time when the others would have gotten a promotion or at least a RDA improvement when they were placed above a senior officer, but apparently that time was over in late 1944.
