Berlin Volkssturm ... at last !

Post by lutrebois » 05 Jul 2017 12:22

Hello friends,
My field of interest is “the battle for Berlin” in all its aspects. In particular, the involvement of the Volkssturm in this Battle has always fascinated me.

Over the years, it became clear that in deep and exact information relating to the Berlin Volkssturm is very rare: diaries, Soldbücher, some surviving documents … provide, at its best, limited info. The book written by Hans KISSEL, former chief of staff of the Volkssturm, provides correct and very high level information related to the organization of the Volkssturm. Comprehensive lists of units, commanders, dates etc … are not enclosed, and IMHO do not exist.

The German Red Cross Vermisstenbildlisten do list a lot of VS-men but the exact unit they went missing in, is rarely mentioned or even, if given, is not correct.

This lack of exact data is very understandable in the light of those final days; a lot of paperwork went lost or was destroyed.

While researching recently in 300 surviving (digitized) documents of the Verteidigungsbereich Berlin – Abschnitt Kommandeur A (also known as Kampfgruppe Bärenfänger) I found 5 extensive documents written by a staff member of NSDAP-Kreis Berlin Pankow-Weißensee wherein the changes in the VS-Battalions, drafted in that Kreis, are communicated. Abschnitt A was an addressee because some VS-units of Pankow-Weißensee were subordinated to the Kampfgruppe Bärenfänger.

These documents, written between February 2nd and April 12th 1945 (thus covering the whole preparation phase for the final battle), provide a relatively clear and complete picture of the existing Pankow-Weißensee VS-units, when and how those were (re)organized, who were the commanders etc …

The Kreis “Pankow-Weißensee” is the smallest (in numbers of Ortschaften) of the 10 Berlin NSDAP-Kreise. Nevertheless, this Kreis drafted 17 Combat Kompanies next to 13 other VS-units, the latter in general used as labour force units for construction of “fortifications”.
Scan Ortsgruppen.jpg
The complex organizational changes within those 5 VS-Kampf Bataillone explains why so many families of MIA and even surviving veterans, after the war, did not remember the exact unit they served in.

Men were drafted in Company “X”, a sub-unit of Battalion “Y”. Then the Coy was renamed “Z” and perhaps transferred to Battalion “H”. Some days later a new Coy-commander was appointed, and knowing that the Companies were named after their commander, one understands easily the mix-up after the war.
The most extreme example I found:
- February 2nd , Kompanie DRAACKE (3/811/2) active in Abschnitt A (Bärenfänger)
- February 12th, The Kompanie DRAACKE (3/811/2) with part of 3/803/6 is renamed 3/803/2.
- March 12th DRAACKE hands over command to BIESKE and takes over Coy 3/809/3
The name “Kompanie DRAACKE” was used for 3 different Companies with the same commander (in 2 different Battalions)!

The 5 Kampf Bataillone of NSDAP-Kreis Pankow-Weißensee were:
- 3/803 ZENKE
- 3/807 TIETBÖHL
- 3/809 VON FISCHEL
- 3/811 HERTEL
- 3/813 HUMMEL

The most interesting data in the VS-documents are the changes that affected the Kampf Bataillone.
Below follow the data for each Kampf Bataillon. I kept the text in the original language.

A week before the battle for Berlin began, the 5 Kampf Bataillone had the following organization:
Kampf Bataillone.jpg
What action they saw, how many exactly were KIA/WIA/MIA we will probably never know.
At least we know now which Pankow-Weißense combat VS-Battalions were formed and engaged in the NE part of Berlin.

Peter

Hi Peter,

very interesting. The overall leader of the Berliner Volkssturm was off course Dr. Joseph Goebbels, his chief of staf (Gaustabsführer) was SA-Ogruf. Günther Gräntz, who fell in Berlin-Zehlendorf on April 30th, 1945.

The Chief of Staff Kissel that you mention must be:
Chef des „Führungsstabes Deutscher Volkssturm beim Reichsführer SS”, Generalmajor Hans Kissel … I must look out for this book ...

My guess is that the SA-Führer of the mentioned SA-Brigaden would also have played a significant role in the defense of Berlin: viewtopic.php?f=45&t=229420

Good morning,
This shuffle between Companies and Battalions did not only take place in NSDAP-Kreis "Pankow-Weißensee", but also in the other Kreise.
The VS-Soldbuch I own, belonged to a man gemustert (drafted) in NSDAP Kreis "Köpenick-Lichtenberg" in the Kompanie "RADECKE" a sub-unit of Battalion 3/909.
This Kompanie RADECKE was, as it seems, "taken over" by VS-Battalion 3/917.

Peter

Hello Peter

What an outstanding post. You inspired me to do some research. Thank you for posting the units on my post my friend.
The following link I found: http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/index ... -8-5-1945/
Which led me to further information, including original maps from the Soviet Units at Berlin. I have made it easier for all to find on my post' on the Volkssturm-Bataillones. I hope this offers some assistance from the 'other side'.!!!!
For those who may not be familiar: - Volkssturm Bataillon in Russian is written Фольксштурм батальонов. This will help on some of the maps when identifying the Volkssturm Units. The relevant maps have been posted in edited form. The larger maps links have also been added for ease of Research: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=192705&start=375

Hello friends,
I have a strange feeling about this Festung Berlin document.
Perhaps I'm to suspicious but:
1. Shouldn't it be "Verteidigungsbereich Berlin" instead of "Festung Berlin" ?
2. We all know "Kampfgruppe Bärenfänger", but officially it should be " Abschnitt Kommandeur A"
3. The Abschnitts Kommandeure A-Z were officially "Kampfkommandanten", REYMANN the level above those was "Befehlshaber Verteidigungsbereich Berlin" and not "Kampfkommandant"
4. The signature on this document looks "odd" compared with the 3 examples from march and april 1945 (written as Befehlshaber VB Berlin), there are differences between the 3 bl/w signatures, but his "a" is very consistent ....
5. In the relatively complete line-up of forces in Abschnitt A (Bärenfänger) there is no Bn FROMM ... but that doesn't mean a lot ... though
Reymann signatures.jpg
So, most likely I'm seeing ghosts ....
So shoot

Peter

Hello to all I see on the list 3/412, this would be a Berlin HJ Bann sent to Aschersleben? I have a HJ .22 trainer rifle made by Mauser, with a a property tag : HJ 111/412 ascherleben on stock, thanks for any information on this HJ Bann 412.

Good evening, Flak44,

you have already asked your questions elsewhere, for the .22 Wehrsportkarabiner, everything was already mentioned before...

What other answers are you looking for?
