Now to the interesting question whether Heine received a valid promotion to Generalmajor. His alleged RDA is given as 01.05.1945, a most unusual date (20.04.1945 should have been the correct one). I could find no primary source which would confirm this. According to Keilig, the promotion was made by Admiral Hüffmeier immediately before the surrender of the Channel Islands. If so, the validity is to be questioned. It seems as if Heine introduced himself as a General to the British during the surrender ceremony aboard HMS Bulldog. British press articles from May 1945 call him a General, but then again, this is Fleet Street talking, and those guys were definitely inventing things: "With him was a resplendent figure in a light-blue Army greatcoat with great red lapels. He was Major-General Heine, of the German Army." (Quoted from the Liverpool Daily Post of 11 May 1945). Now, as you can see on this IWM photo, Heine was clearly wearing the uniform of an Oberst that day. I would like to see the surrender document and how Heine signed it, but I think it is reasonable to believe he was there as a General. The question remains whether Hüffmeier had the authority to promote him, which I doubt.

A few additions:
No mention of a promotion to Generalmajor in the Personalakte, though that is not surprising given the alleged date and circumstances.
Poor quality image:
* For the LK and the SMK, either they were awarded on the same day, or the clerk mistakenly entered the two awards together. I will probably be able to confirm when I next go to Detmold.askropp wrote:Siegfried Ludwig August Friedrich Johann Paul Heine

Re: Oberst (Generalmajor?) Siegfried Heine (1883-1975)
The question remains: did someone with sufficient authority promote Heine in time? Probably yes, but we still have no proof.
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
