Re: Ribbon Bar ID: Vizeadmiral Franz Wieting
Thanks Thierry, when I asked for his awards few months ago you said he was awarded the ROA mit Schl. u. X (Klasse ?), so is it possible he recieved the ROA 3. Klasse later because the Schleife could only be awarded to 3. Klasse and above? Maybe RL 1924?

Looks like a mix-up with the Hausorden von Hohenzollern and the Fürstlich Hohenzollernsches Ehrenkreuz, one Prussian, the other from the Principality.

Re: Ribbon Bar ID: Vizeadmiral Franz Wieting
Wieting received the Königlich Hausorden von Hohenzollern, Ritterkreuz mit Schwertern. That is the icon between the Red Eagle and the Iron Cross in the rank list excerpt posted by Thierry. Prussian awards in Prussian Army and Imperial Navy rank lists were represented by icons, with non-Prussian awards represented by abbreviations. The Fürstlich Hohenzollernsches Ehrenkreuz 3.Klasse would be "HEK3", "HEK3X" if with swords. Since we don't have the icons on our computers, we use abbreviations for Prussian awards as well. "HOH3X" is the most common abbreviation for the Knight's Cross with Swords of the Königlich Hausorden von Hohenzollern.
Wieting was way too junior to have received the Roter Adlerorden 3.Klasse mit der Schleife und Schwertern (RAO3SX). As the rank list excerpts show, he had the Roter Adlerorden 4.Klasse (RAO4). By the way, the Schleife could only be awarded to the 3.Klasse. Its purpose was to show that a holder of the RAO3 had previously received the RAO4. For higher classes, the Eichenlaube served that purpose. So an officer who had the RAO4 and then received the RAO3 in its place would receive it with the Schleife, and if he then received the RAO2 in place of the RAO3S, it would be with Eichenlaube (RAO2E).
Also, one normally did not wear more than one class of the Red Eagle. An exception was made if you received it with the Royal Crown. So, for example, you may see medal bars with the RAO3S and the RAO4Kr together (Vizeadmiral Walter Engelhardt (1867-1943), for example).
