Staffelkapitän KG 51
Staffelkapitän KG 51
Does anyone know of a Staffelkapitän Henning 5./KG 51?
There is a photo of him on Ebay (200 Euros!!!) showing him receiving an award for Staffel 5's 3000th mission.
I am trying to trace KG 51 officers with the initials RH. So far I have found two - Oblt Rudolf Hallensleben and Major Rudolf Hanne. But I am unable to find the first name of StK Henning, who was killed late in the war, or any other information.
I have looked in the excellent book Kampfgeschwader 51 "Edelweiß" (Wolfgang Dietrich) and while Oblt Henning is listed as third last staffelkapitan of 11 Gruppe 5 Staffel his first name and initial are not given.
I would be grateful for any assistance after failing in many hours of research.
Thank You!

Hello Larry D.
That was quick! I've tried ages to try to find StK Henning's first name without success but now you've solved it - I'd love to know how. The photo on Ebay seems to have been taken somewhere hot - the officer is wearing a straw hat and one of the guys near is in shirt sleeves.
Many thanks for you help and best wishes.

His Gruppe was in South Ukraine from 1941 to 1943. Lots and lots of hot weather there during the summer months.

Hello again Larry D.
Thanks to your help I've discovered that Hptm. Kurt Henning was transferred on 29/12/44 as Staka 13./Erg.KG 1. I believe he was working on the jet fighter being developed. But I don't know if he survived the war like his former KG 51 colleague Rudolf Henne, the much decorated officer with 450 missions who died in 1962. I believe Henne's son, Rudolf H. Henne, now retired, became a director of the German Aerospace Centre and Institute of Technical Thermodynamics. He must have inherited his father's love of the air!

If you have his date and place of birth, you can fill in this inquiry blank and the results may tell you if he was killed and buried during the war:
