Division Nr. 179 commander, 1940
Division Nr. 179 commander, 1940
Hello,
This replacement division first commander was Generalmajor Herbert Stimmel, from its set up on January 5th, 1940 until April 11th, 1940
But then, it seems to be pretty blurry to understand who was in charge of the division until January 20th, 1942.
The better sources on hand say that it was Generalleutnant Max von Hartlieb genannt Walsporn. But we know for sure that he was commanding the 5. Panzer-Division during the Westfeldzug until May 22nd, 1940. So he couldn't replace Stimmel in early April.
Who was the officer(s) who headed Division Nr. 179 between April 1940 until January 1942?
Thank you for your help.
Cheers,
CNE503

Great, thanks!
Anyone to fill the gap between April 11th and June 20th, 1940?

Re: Division Nr. 179 commander, 1940
I have Herbert Stimmel 10-1-60 to 11-4-40 (to 98 ID mFb, switched with Schroeck for some reason)
Erich Schroeck 11-4-40 to __-5-40 mFb (also Kdr 98 ID before and after)
Stimmel again __-5-40 to 20-6-40 (also listed as going to 279 ID 10-6 but forming discontinued 20-6)- one of many after surrender of France
all from Mehner backed up by Keilig and Askropp's biog of Stimmel
I can't find the date the generals switched divisions the second time- maybe someone with the division cards can help us.
Best,
Bill in Cleveland

Re: Division Nr. 179 commander, 1940
Thank you Bill, it is very helpful. Indeed, if anyone can give us the exact dates of command for Schroeck and Stimmel, it would be great!

I'm interested in, but it looks very time-consuming. If you have some, I'd be glad to have them, for sure!
