Generalleutnant Richard von Schwerin
Re: General Richard Graf von Schwerin
After remembering what I read in a text about the last days of Korps Ems some time ago (but unfortunately not the source), I have a possible explanation for Rodt's outfit. During the first days of May, Rodt sent a negotiating party to his British opponents under a flag of truce, asking for surrender conditions on behalf of his KG Rasp. When they were told that only an unconditional surrender would be accepted, Rodt answered that Rasp was not willing to do that and would prefer to continue the fighting. Playing the Africa card, Rodt then reminded the British of the "chivalrous fighting" in Africa and that the units on both sides were "old adversaries" from the Western desert and Sicily, hoping to change their minds. Of course, this was unsuccessful, but he could have donned an old tropical uniform to underline this effort. The fighting ended anyway because Friedeburg had signed the Lüneburg surrender in the meantime.
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
