hi,

Reinhard Hardegen, one of the first five "Drumbeat" commanders, the oldest living WW II u-boat CO and the last living U-boat CO decorated with the Oak Leaves, passed away on Saturday, June 9, at an age of 105.

Rest in Peace.

greetings, the pb

hi,

yes, indeed, the last but one. According to the internet, the last seems (!) to be http://www.luftwaffe.cz/rokker.html

But, as this is a u-boat thread, another sad information: Kapitänleutnant Horst Wilhelm Kessler
https://www.uboat.net/men/commanders/598.html passed away on May, 24, 2018, as well.

RIP

greetings, the pb

RIP Reinhard Hardegen,

he was a very nice guy, in july 2015 I telephoned with him , because I had a question..
He was absolut fit in/ for his age . At last he told me a little anecdote and after that we closed because it was lunch time and I did't want to disturb him longer.
( After the U-BOOT Museum Cuxhaven heard about that, they asked me if I had asked him, "if he still drives his car ..." :D - I said : no )

So a nice guy passed away, but with a honoric age and after a successful life.

Regards
