Database of Kriegsmarine Admirals

#1

Post by Kriegsmarine Großadmiral » 30 Dec 2018, 15:27

Hello everyone,
welcome to my new thread/database. For almost 2 years now I have been collecting the awards & decorations and photos of all the Kriegsmarine admirals. On this thread I will be posting the lists of awards & decorations and photos of all the admirals that served between 1933 and 1945 (these include some admirals that were not active in the Kriegsmarine but were active during the Third Reich, so between 1933 and 1935). Also, the admirals that were placed at the disposal of the Kriegsmarine, but not mobilised, will also be included.

In total 340 admirals will be posted, these include:
2 Großadmirale
11 Generaladmirale
40 Admirale
91 Vizeadmirale
168 Konteradmirale
2 Admiraloberstabsärzte
1 Admiralstabsarzt
25 Admiralärzte
Seeoffiziere, Ingenieuroffiziere, Waffenoffiziere, Verwaltungsoffiziere and Sanitätsoffiziere in Admiralsrang will all be included.

This database won't include the biographies of the admirals, because they are easily accessible on the ABR site.
See here: http://www.oocities.org/~orion47/WEHRMA ... EGSMARINE/

The sources for the lists of awards & decorations are the following:
- Rangliste der Kaiserlich Deutschen Marine 1914 and Rangliste der Kaiserlich Deutschen Marine 1918
- Rangliste der Deutschen Reichsmarine 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932
- Seeoffiziere Gesamtliste Excel Table, given to me by a member of the "Gentleman's Military Interest Club" forum. This table was mainly used for the award dates of the Ritterkreuz des Königlichen Preussischer Hausordens von Hohenzollern mit Schwertern, foreign awards that were awarded after the publication of the 1914 Rangliste (this Rangliste was the last one that listed foreign awards before the 1926 Rangliste) and some additional awards like the Kolonial-Denkmünze (and the Spange).
- ABR site (linked above) (ABR lists awards for only a certain amount of admirals, it is sometimes flawed with mistakes)
- Ribbon/Medal bars (original ones from the photos or private collections)
- Period documents that give the awards names and dates when they were awarded and to whom
- Photographic evidence (awards from the photograpic evidence I will mark accordingly with "(photographic evidence)")
- Speculations on my part (I took the liberty to speculate about some, mostly WW2 awards. Those awards that are speculations and can't be confirmed by the Rangliste, documents or photographic evidence will be marked with "(not confirmed)" after the award name)

In these 2 years I went through the awards for every single admiral multiple times. However, I can't guarantee my lists are 100% accurate. They are as accurate as the sources I used. Nevertheless, I wish (and strongly suggest) all the members of the forum that will follow this thread correct any mistakes I made and add any awards (and award dates) I missed (or if I wrote some awards that the mentioned admiral didn't recieve).

And at last but not least, I want to thank everyone who through the threads "Awards and decorations of some Admirals needed", "Unknown Awards and Decorations (Medals)", all the other separate threads or private messages, helped me with the awards of the admirals.
On this forum I want to thank the members Requin Marteau, Cartaphilus, VJK, luftk, graveland, Dave Danner, VtwinVince and all the others that helped me in some way.
I have to also mention and thank all the members of the Gentleman's Military Interest Club, Wehrmacht-Awards.com forum, Historical War Militaria Forum and Forum Marine Archiv that helped me with the awards.

Also, I have to mention that my German is not the best, so excuse any spelling mistakes I made in the names of the awards.

I hope everyone will enjoy and have some benefit from this database. I would also kindly ask the moderators to correct or add (when I won't be able) any information that other members will write on this thread.

Before I start posting the admirals I would like to address one issue I encountered and discussed with Gregg (graveland).

To make it easier I will copy-paste the PM I sent to Gregg. You can be the judge and see if I'm right. Please comment below.

"Hey Gregg, I just realised something.

You remember you said yesterday that your source for the award dates of Saalwächter are the books "Die Ritterkreuzträger der Überwasserstreitkräfte der Kriegsmarine" by Manfred Dörr?

Well, I made a groundbreaking discovery! 8O

For example let's look at the dates for the awards of Saalwächter:

Ritterkreuz des Königlichen Preußischen Hausordens von Hohenzollern mit Schwertern: 05.03.1922
Hamburger Hanseatenkreuz: 05.03.1922
U-Bootskriegsabzeichen: 01.01.1929

The thing I find suspicious about these dates is, those are very late dates to be awarding WW1 awards. Since the Hohenzollern dynasty abdicated on 11.11.1918 why would they be awarding the Ritterkreuz des Königlichen Preußischen Hausordens in 1922? Even the Weimar Republic awarding these awards doesn't make sense. (Edit: now I know that the Königlichen Preußischen Hausorden was awarded even after the abdication of the Hohenzollern dynasty)

Today I was going through the awards of Otto von Schrader and he had similar dates for his awards:

Ritterkreuz des Königlichen Preussischer Hausordens von Hohenzollern mit Schwertern: 05. 03. 1922
Hamburgisches Hanseatenkreuz: 05. 03. 1922
Kaiserliche Türkischer Eiserner Halbmond: 20. 11. 1926 (this is a Ottoman award, but the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist in 1922. Why would they award the Eiserner Halbond almost 4 years later?)
U-Bootskriegsabzeichen (1918): 20. 11. 1926

It seems quite suspicious to me that both Saalwächter and Schrader would recieve some awards on the same dates (HOH3x and HH for example).
It's because these dates don't represent the award dates of these awards... :?

They are the publication dates of the Reichsmarine Rangliste:

1922 Rangliste was published on 05.03.1922! (same date as HOH3x and HH for Saalwächter and Schrader)
1926 Rangliste was published on 20.11.1926! (same date as TH and U-Bootkrieg. for Schrader)
1929 Rangliste was published on 01.01.1929! (same date as U-Bootkrieg. for Saalwächter)

How do I know this? I have these Rangliste in PDF.

I guess the author of these books (Manfred Dörr) also used the Rangliste when he wrote the awards for every Kriegsmarine Ritterkreuzträger and just put the dates of the publication of the Rangliste as the date a certain award was awarded....

So basically, we don't actually know when Saalwächter and Schrader were awarded the HH, TH or U-Bootkrieg...

Another proof: If Saalwächter was awarded the U-Bootkriegabz. on 01.01.1929, then why is it listed in the 1928 Rangliste?
And the Excel table I sent you a while ago gives different dates for the HOH3x:
Schrader: 04.08.1918
Saalwächter: 31.03.1918

Even the date of Schrader's EK I (01.08.1916) is the publication date of the 1916 Kaiserliche Marine Rangliste!
And also, the dates of Saalwächter's EK I and EK II are: 14.02.1918 and 01.08.1916. Guess what? The publication dates of 1918 and 1916 Kaiserliche Marine Rangliste! What are the odds that Saalwächter and Schrader would be awarded the EK II on the same date (01.08.1916)?"

Is there any record of Großadmiral Raeder being awarded the German Red Cross Decoration 1st Class with Star?

I ask as other branch Commanders (Reichsmarschall Göring and Generalfeldmarschall von Brauchitsch) were given this award, along with other high ranking military types with Reichminister status, or equivalent (such as Generalfeldmarschall Milch and Generalfeldmarschall Keitel).

I didn't find any records that would indicate Raeder recieved it. If you find out please share with us.

Apart from my supposition, the only "evidence" I have found is this ribbon bar, sold as Raeders' some years ago. The photo is not of a great quality so it is hard to determine if the bar is even good. However, if it is, the third ribbon on second row is for the German Red Cross.

This ribbon bar you posted is missing the Imtiaz-Medaille mit Säbeln and the Eiserner Halbmond. Also, Raeder didn't recieve the "Vor dem Feinde" Spange to his Friedrich August-Kreuz II. Klasse. You can check the photos where he is wearing a ribbon bar.
But this is only my observation. It could be his, but I am not sure.

Good job.

On the first pic there is one o two more ribbons after the Wehrmacht Long Service Awards. I think that the first is the commemorative medal for the Annexation of Sudeten Lands.

Look:

Regarding Rolf Carls
-Finnischer Orden des Freiheitskreuzes I. Klasse mit Stern und Schwertern (25. 03. 1942)
See my post here: viewtopic.php?p=2161359#p2161359
According to Antti Matikkala's book Kunnian ruletti, Generaladmiral Rolf Carls was originally awarded Order of the Cross of Liberty, 1st Class, with Swords and Oak Leaves on 25 March 1942. However, at the same time his subordinate Vizeadmiral Kurt Fricke was awarded the same decoration with Swords and Breast Star, a decoration one tier higher than Carls's. This was obviously an embarrassing mistake by Finns, and the decorations were eventually switched on 15 April: Swords and Breast Star for Carls, Swords and Oakleaves for Fricke. The official date of award remained 25 March.

Generaladmiral Carls received his decoration on 27 April when the Finnish representative at OKH, Lieutenant General Paavo Talvela and naval attaché Lieutenant Commander Hakon Grönholm visited him in Kiel.

I agree Cartaphilus, that indeed looks like the Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938. I will add it to the list. What could the last ribbon be?
I will also post the photo of the ribbon bar so others can see.
