Please let me know when you check this book. I am curious. I don't think they would make up this info on the Wiki page, they did quote the book after all.

Edit: I found Canaris' entry in this book on Google books. Can you please translate it? From the index it appears Canaris is mentioned only once, on this page (69).
It says:

Admiral Canaris, Chief of Intelligence of the German Defense Forces, was here for a lunch yesterday. This sympathetic admiral is certainly also a wise and erudite man. Before the lunch the admiral visited the Commander-in-Chief [Mannerheim] with Erfurth, where both received the Cross of Liberty, 1st Class, with a Breast Star.

In other words, it says nothing about the Oak Leaves. (It doesn't have to say anything about the Swords, because for military men the decorations of the Order of the Cross of Liberty were always given with Swords.)

Thank you Mikko. I guess the info on German Wiki was wrong then. You were right.

We have a new update for Konteradmiral Otto Fricke viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2186706&hi ... e#p2186706

This new (poor quality) photo of him reveals a new award. Barely visible below the EK I is a badge award. The silhouette is identical with the Kriegsabzeichen für die Marineartillerie. Bottom half of the award is filled and also the gun can be seen on the left corner, a shadow sticking out. It makes sense Fricke would have this award because he was the Inspekteur der Marineartillerie (01 April 1943-22 July 1945). If anyone disagrees and thinks this is NOT the Kriegsabzeichen für die Marineartillerie, please comment below. See the close-up of the badge on the second photo below.

Moderators, please add:

-Kriegsabzeichen für die Marineartillerie (add it at the bottom of his list)

You can also add this new photo of Fricke:

We have several new award updates! Big thanks to Antonio Prieto from the GMIC forum for the help regarding the Spanish awards!

For Konteradmiral Hans Mirow viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2189174&hi ... w#p2189174

Please add:

-Kriegsverdienstkreuz (1939) II. Klasse mit Schwertern
-Kriegsverdienstkreuz (1939) I. Klasse mit Schwertern
(add them below the Spanienkreuz in Silber ohne Schwerter)

Admiral Paul Fanger viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2179073&hi ... r#p2179073

This better quality photo confirms he was awarded the Kommandeurkreuz des Königlich Ungarischen Verdienstordens (worn around the neck). There are no Hungarian Breast Stars visible, so that means the Class can't be Großoffizierskreuz.

Please delete the "(not confirmed)" bracket after his Kommandeurkreuz des Königlich Ungarischen Verdienstordens.

Also, delete the second photo and add this better quality photo:
Image

For Admiral Conrad Patzig viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2180015&hi ... g#p2180015

Please add:

-Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938 (add it below the Wehrmacht Dienstauszeichnung IV. bis I. Klasse)

For Admiral Paul Wenneker viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2180240&hi ... r#p2180240

Please add:

-Medaille zur Erinnerung an die Heimkehr des Memellandes (add it below the Kaiserlich Japanischer Orden von der Aufgehenden Sonne I. Klasse)

Thierry told me before that Wenneker was awarded the Memel Medaille. However, he didn't have proof. But just now I realized why Wenneker must have had this award. During the occupation of Memel in March 1939, Wenneker was the Commandant of the Armoured-Ship "Deutschland". And on 23 March 1939 Hitler traveled to Memel on board the "Deutschland".

You can also delete the sentence after the "*" at the bottom.

Also add for Wenneker:

-Großoffizierskreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens (05. 11. 1937) (add it below the Kaiserlich Japanischer Orden des Heiligen Schatzes III. Klasse)

*Note: In Spanish this Class is called "Comendador de número" (in English: "Commander of Number"), however, in German terminology this Class corresponds to Großoffizierskreuz. See here for more details: https://www.coleccionesmilitares.com/me ... hdauia.htm

For Generaladmiral Wilhelm Marschall viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2178180&hi ... l#p2178180

Please add:

-Großkreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens (05. 11. 1937) (add it below the Wehrmacht Dienstauszeichnung IV. bis I. Klasse)

For Admiral Hermann von Fischel viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2179238&hi ... l#p2179238

Add the award date (05. 03. 1938) after his Großkreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens

For Generaladmiral Hermann Boehm viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2178074&hi ... m#p2178074

Add the award date (05. 04. 1938) after his Großkreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens

For Generaladmiral Rolf Carls viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2178090&hi ... s#p2178090

Please update the following award like this:

-Großkreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens (05. 04. 1938, Approved on 03. 12. 1938)

There are a couple biographies to choose from:

"Canaris: The Life and Death of Hitler's Spymaster" by Michael Mueller
"Canaris: Hitler's Master Spy" by Heinz Hohne
"Hitler's Spy Chief" by Richard Bassett
"Canaris; the biography of Admiral Canaris, chief of German Military Intelligence in the Second World War" by André Brissaud

However, I couldn't tell you which one describes his WW1 career in greatest detail. I would try with Heinz Hohne's book. It has the most pages (752) out of the four mentioned. Perhaps that one has a lot about his WW1 career.

Is it possible that Mootz was never awarded the Kriegsverdienstkreuz I. & II. Klasse mit Schwertern and was only awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Silber?
Of course this is possible, as Mootz had the Spangen to both EKs and the DKiS could be awarded to persons who had either those OR the two KVKs. (Needless to say, it was not possible the other way round, i.e. the DKiG required both EKs).
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.

Thanks to Gregg (graveland) who identified the officer on this photo, we have a new update for him!

For Konteradmiral Rudolf Peters viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2189652&hi ... s#p2189652

Please add:

-Schlesischer Adler-Orden II. und I. Stufe (add it below the Eisernes Kreuz (1939) II. Klasse)
-Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1. Oktober 1938 (add it below the Wehrmacht Dienstauszeichnung IV. bis II. Klasse)

This photo confirms Peters had the Flottenkriegsabzeichen, so please delete the "(not confirmed) *" part written after it.

You can also delete all the text after the * at the bottom.

Please add the new photo, and delete the second photo that is posted now (the close-up of the ribbon bar)
Image

For Admiral Wilhelm Canaris viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2178934&hi ... s#p2178934

Please add:

-Großkreuz des Königlich Spanisch-Marrokanischen Mehdauia-Ordens (17. 11. 1938) (add it below the Wehrmacht Dienstauszeichnung IV. bis I. Klasse)

For Char. Vizeadmiral Karl Bartenbach viewtopic.php?f=5&t=239341&p=2180843&hi ... h#p2180843

Please add the award date (06. 06. 1917) for his Lübeckisches Hanseatenkreuz

Although no one confirmed his second pinback cross (circled red on the first photo) is the Herzoglich Braunschweigisches Kriegsverdienstkreuz I. Klasse, I am pretty sure it's that award. So, please delete the "(not confirmed)" written after it. Also delete all the text at the bottom.

You can also delete the first photo (the one with the red circle).
