Large Portrait Photographs of Army Generalleutnant / Knights Cross Recipient Wolfgang von Kluge. The image depicts the General in visor cap and wearing the Knights Cross, the German Cross in Gold, and other decorations on his uniform. The photograph is approximately 6 1/4 by 8 1/2 inches in size. It is a photographer’s “proof” image, and the “proofs” would have been sent to General von Kluge to select the images that he wanted from the photographer, specifying the sizes and quantities. Born in 1896, von Kluge had a long military career that spanned both world wars. He served in Russia, and by the summer of 1944 von Kluge was commanding a Division in France at the time of the D-Day invasion. Von Kluge’s brother, Field Marshal Gunther von Kluge, was Commander in Chief West at this same time. Wolfgang von Kluge was essentially forced into retirement in December of 1944 as a result of the fact that his brother had committed suicide in August of 1944 in the aftermath of the failed assassination attempt upon Adolf Hitler.
