Question regarding Gen. Friedrich von Boetticher

#1

Post by daveshoup2MD » 16 Jan 2022, 05:05

Friedrich von Boetticher was the German military attache in the U.S. (and Mexico, apparently) for much the 1930s; what were his wartime duties, once he returned to Germany?

Thanks in advance

Thanks. The following:

01.06.1942 Führerreserve OKH
09.12.1942 Chef der Wehrmacht-Zentral-Abteilung / OKW

doesn't say a whole lot, though.

Thanks. Can anyone say what he did do, after returning to Germany? Or point to a source?

Many thanks. My apologies, but as Q-IV, was he essentially serving as the OKH headquarters commandant?

Hi daveshoup2MD

On his return to Germany he was transferred to the Führerreserve OKH with his activities allocated (D.r.) by the O Qu IV. He was attached to the Attacheabtailung. Effective from 09.12.1942 he was transferred to the OKW WZ while still remaining attached to the Attacheabteilung.
According to his annual report dated 31.03.1944, some time later he seems to have been appointed General zbv 2 in the OKW.

Regards

John

Thanks. Based on the above, is it possible to determine if he was playing any sort of intelligence or advisory role, in regards to German planning regarding the United States military?

Hello
One of his Karteikarten reads "5.12.42 kdrt. z. Att.-Abt." and then (added by hand) "Gen.zbV.2".
Then the HPA-Karte of the Gen.zbV.2 reads Boetticher from 9.12.42
Rgds.
P.S.: There were the Gen.zbV.2 and 4, the 3 too or not ? If yes, who was it ?

evaluation of Keitel dated 31.04.1944 :
"keen head with extensive knowledge of history and the american conditions, clear view of the big connections of the entire warfare. His reporting (Berichterstattung) provides valuable documentation for the leadership of Prominent Military Political Judgment. Outstanding in its special field."
Best regards

Interesting; many thanks. Seems odd the Germans appear to consistently misjudged the Americans, then. Interestingly enough, his American counterparts - Smith, Wedemeyer, and Koenig (to a degree) - all appear to have had significant advisory, planning, and/or operational roles after 1941...
