What did Hitler eat?

#1

Post by Emerson Begolly » 12 Jul 2003, 19:40

Yes, I know that Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian. What I want to know, though, is what did he eat? Back then, did they have meat substitutes or something special for the Fuhrer? Did he eat fish or eggs? Some info would be helpful!

Thanks,
Em.

He had a fondness for baked potatoes soaked in raw linseed oil and ate a lot of oatmeal/porridge, spaghetti, and especialy sweets. The man had a sweet tooth that could devour entire cake shops. ANd there were a few meat dishes he would still eat, a certain sausage that "Photo" Hoffman was famous for making as wel as Bavarian liver dumplings.

Hope that helps,
Eva

Isn't there a story about him eating a lot of cabage stew, or is this this stereo type nonsense?
He ate cream cakes in the tea house each afternoon.

In 'The Last Battle' by Cornelius Ryan on pg 497 it states,

"He [Adolf Hitler] lunched with his two secretaries and his vegetarian cook; waiter Erwin Jakubek remembered that the last meal was "spaghetti with a light sauce."'

---
In 'Hitler Diagnosis of a Destructive Prophet' by Fritz Redlich, M.D. on pg 77-78 it states:

"Several Hitler associates, amongst them Otto Wagener, reported that Hitler became a vegetarian after the death of his niece Angela (Geli) Raubal in 1931. As a teenager and young man, Hitler certainly ate meat. He also ate meat during his service in World War I and probably before his imprisonment at Landsberg. Hitler's vegetarianism was quite strict. He praised raw food but did not adhere to a diet of uncooked foods, which was a fad at the time. He avoided any kind of meat, with the exception of an Austrian dish he loved, Leberknödl (liver dumpling). For awhile he ate cooked and canned fish, but later the only animal products he consumed were milk, butter, and cottage cheese. He liked leguminous vegetables but gave them up when they caused intestinal pain. For the same reason he also restricted his eating of salads and most kinds of breads (which he ate without crust). His indulgences in rich Austrian desserts never changed. [...] With rare exceptions after the early thirties Hitler did not consume alcoholic beverages; just occasionally a glass of beer or wine. He found wine too sour and beer too bitter, He was critical of some of his alcoholic associates such as Robert "the Reichs-Drunkard" Ley"

If I remember correctly Hitler's chef had more than 500 recipies for eggs. I' sure any of the standard biographies (Toland or Bullock or Fiest) would confirm this.

During his official visit in Italy in 1938, during Gala dinner with the King V.E.III uncle Adolf ate only swiss milkless chocolate. He refused any italian food, and the small King went hurried thinking to an insult toward the Country. Spaghetti are a serious matter in Italy  Cornelius Ryan's last report about Hitler is totally unbelievable.

Hitler's food

#8

Post by RACPISA » 13 Jul 2003, 23:41

At midday, Hitler bolted a heaped plate of rice and vegetables after it had been previously tasted for him. Pills and liqueur glasses containing various medicines were arranged round his place, and he took them in turn. Two SS men stood guard beside his chair.
This was from General Hans Speidel, who, with a bunch of other generals, attended a meeting with Hitler about the recent Normandy landings in mid-June 1944.

Hitler also drank a lot of tea, like camomile, peppermint, and apple peel tea.

Interview with Friedlind Wagner:
"Hitler's breakfast usually consisted of a glass of milk and two slices of dry bread. Sometimes he would eat lunch a half an hour later. … She also remembers that before this time he drank a good deal of tea and she remembers, as a very small child, how she and her sister would sit at the table and anxiously await the time for Hitler to sweeten it. In those days he always put seven teaspoons full of sugar into a cup of tea and the children were fascinated to see whether on some occasion he would lose his count. But he never did. She also commented on the tremendous amount of chocolate he consumed throughout the day. He had the firm of Hamann prepare a special kind of chocolate for him and on an average, he consumed about two pounds of these every day. "

His full menu is presented in W. Maser's book. I'll seek it.

Ok, guys, here's my research product, which consumes most of your suggestions:

Hitler's breakfast:
During his first years in power:A cup of milk, dried rye bread
(later-sweet bun), tea (apple, mint, camomil) when Adolf is chilled-
tea with a little cognac, and apple. Seldom asked for some cheese
("Gerve").
In 1944-45 ate lots of chocolate n' cream cookies, and porridge made of:
milked cornflakes, polished apples, nuts, lemon, and grains.

Hitler's supper:
Fruits, soup,(not meat based), beans, carrot and other vegetables,
potatoes, salad with lemon.
The favorite soup is: rich with beans, peas, and lentil.
Hitler also likes potato "in uniform", which he clears and dips in oil.
If bifshteks is served, Hitler eats a "fake" one, made of vegetables,
in order not to opress his guests.
Hiler's food is always similar to his guests', except the meat.
Starting with 1941 he eats sardins in oil, and liver quenelles(So he wasn't full vegetarian after all ).
For a short period, he ate eggs and caviar. After he discovered the
high prices on caviar, he stopped eating it.
Fried eggs and tasteless bread, with it's "hard" part cut, is also
appreciated.
Finally, he likes balls made of wheat flour. They have to
be made in different ways, though(baked, roasted, cooked).

Hitler's dinner:
Cooked eggs, potato "in uniform" and cottage cheese.

Now, you can all become experts in "Hitler kuche" and amaze your families and friends.

Almost everything he ate seemed to include beans. No wonder he passed gas so many times. :P

I wouldn't call soup during supper "everything".

But I've read in John Toland's book that his preference was always a big bowl of soup served with bread.
...and do not dare what happened with Hitler's moustache!
