Major z.V. Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (1889-1939)
Major z.V. Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (1889-1939)
Hello
In PV there is this active Maj.(m. W. v. 1.3.40, m. RDA. v. 1.6.39) from Stab d. XVII.AK., first name ?
Then I have in a KRL another Soppe who around sept.39 was Maj. z.V., first name ?
(this latter one is listed as von Soppe, but maybe von is a mistake)
At first I thought that it was one and the same Soppe but, apart the von, that cannot be because the first one was active and in sept.39 a Hptm., whilst the second one was in sept.39 a Maj. and z.V.
Thanks

Re: Maj. Soppe
Danke Christian
Do You mean that there was one Soppe only ? But if so, how is it explainable that one source (PV.) reports him in sept. 39 as Hptm. (he became Maj. on 1.3.40 later backdated m. neuem RDA on 1.6.39), whilst another source (KRL.) reports him in sept. 39 already as Maj. (z.V.) ?

Hello,
The Wilhelm (von) Soppe born 18.10.1889 died on 11.09.1939 of wounds sustained in an automobile accident. At the time of his death, he was Major z.V. and his Truppenteil was given as AOK 12.

Re: Maj. Soppe
Excellent Jake, many thanks !
P.S.: sure that he died in sept. 39 ?
Because AOK 12 was formed as from oct. 39 (before it was AOK 14)
Frech wrote above that he even became Otl. in march 42............

Re: Maj. Soppe
11.09.1939 is correct regarding his Gräberkarteikarte at the BA/MA
born 18.10.1889 in Graz - so should be the same Wilhelm von Soppe at AOK 12
born 18.10.1889 in Graz - so should be the same Wilhelm von Soppe at AOK 12
Re: Maj. Soppe
I would see it´s a hint that were two Soppes. It´s always the same problem with german rank lists, that are no first names listed...
The 01.03.1942 Oberstleutnant Soppe should be the second, younger one. It would be my mistake.

Re: Maj. Soppe
No problem Christian
So, in other words here we have finally 2 Soppe (like I first guessed....)
one as active officer from Stab d. XVII.AK., name still missing :
Maj.(m. W. v. 1.3.40, m. RDA. v. 1.6.39) and then Otl. (RDA. 1.3.42), kia (unknown date)
and one as Maj. z.V., name Wilhelm, im Stabe d. AOK.14(!), who died on 11.9.39
Thanks to all

Re: Maj. Soppe
I would assume that Fmlt. Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (+1932) had two sons:
1. the later Major Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (from AOK 12 or 14) who died 11.09.1939
2. the later Oberstleutnant Norbert Edler von Soppe, who would fit for XVII. AK. and Oberstleutnant 01.03.1942. He was commissioned
with RDA 01.08.1914 from Technische Militärakademie Mödling to FKR 7 and Oberleutnant with 01.07.1915.
In 1918 both Soppes, Wilhelm (as Hauptmann) and Norbert (as Oberleutnant), served together in FAR 128.
Maybe Jake could check them?
I could find out that Wilhelm Soppe and Norbert Soppe are buried in the same grave on Zentralfriedhof Wien. Wilhelm on 16.09.1939 and Norbert on 10.12.1963 (he must have died some days before in December 1963):

Re: Major z.V. Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (1889-1939)
Well done Christian
So, it seems that we have at last (thanks to You) also the second first name which was still missing, i. e. Norbert. Thanks

Re: Major z.V. Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (1889-1939)
Hello,
Norbert (Edler von) Soppe (Graz, 07.05.1893 - 28.11.1963, Wien)
Wilhelm and Norbert were brothers and the only children of the abovementioned Feldmarschallleutnant Wilhelm Edler von Soppe (Graz, 17.02.1857 - 31.05.1932, Wien-Dornbach).
Norbert apparently retired from the army after WWI. In 1921, he was a Bankbeamter.
