Oskar Niedermayer
General and Oskar Ritter von Niedermayer...
Before WW1 he was a young captain in a bavarian artillery rgt...they sent him in a spy mission in Afghanistan and Persia ounder the false name of Abd-el-Wahab.He was ,too,a professor and spoke fluently russian, persian (farsi),TURKISH AND SOME CENTRAL ASIAN DIALECTS..
In WW1 ,being 29,he was assigned to Wilhelm Wassmus, the german consul in Persia,Wassmuss had to go south to sabotage the british pipe line, wich he succeeded ,leading 2000 rebells and eviting that Persia entered the war at the side of the allied....Berlin decided to send Niedermayer to Afghanistan but a lot of officers does not liked him and they doubled him with Werner-Otto von Hentig... Both men mistrhusted each other and von Hentig asked Berlin to remove Niedermayer saying he was a ''crazy megalomaniac'' !
From Berlin,Baron Max,their chief, answered :''Both missions must left soon !''....In 1915,or 1916, they were both captured by afghan authorities-along with their agents,Guenther Voigt and Kurt Wagner- but the son of the afghan emir hated the brits and convinced his father to liberate them.
Then von Hentig headed east, reaching Pekin in China and von Niedermayer and Kurt Wagner and Günther Voigt reached Turkistan,(ounder russian power) and then Persia, pursued by the russians and the brits. In Bagdad, being safe at least,(Irak was ounder Turkish occupation) the nerves of Niedermayer went down and he was sent back to Germany...After the war,he stayed in the Reichswehr were some officers wanted him to fade...not so :he was assigned as a military attache in soviet Russia from 1921 to 1932.In WW2 ,being a general,he commanded the 162th Inf-div.recruited in Mecklenburg and Pomerania. This division suffered a lot of casualties in Russia during the winterfight.Niedermayer began to enlist soviet prisonners from central asia as volunteers...
the wehrmacht supported him soon, and the division was officially declared ''Aufstellung und Ausbildungsstab für ausländische Freiwilligen-Verbände aus sowjetrussischen Kriegsgefangenen'',( forming and training staff for units of russian prisonners),this division was stationned in Ukrainia (Mirgorod-Kiev-Poltava) and trained in Poland...
Known as the Turkmenistanisches-division,the 162th was sent against partisans in Slovakia and then in Italy where it ended the war,the volunteers being sent back to Stalin's tenderness by the allies...
Hoping this info will help you...here is a picture of turkmenes volunteers of the 162th swearing the oath at Kruszyna camp,Poland,Nov.1943.

Does anyone has this article on him: Seidler F.W. Oskar Ritter von Niedermayer im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Ostlegionen // Wehrwissenschaftliche Rundschau. 1970. № 12. S. 683–702.?
