I just saw "Joe and Max" on STARZ and they showed a brief scene where MS was a paratrooper.Since I'm a newbie and this is my "Poppin' the cherry" post,I was curious if anybody had any info on where he fought.

Thanks.

Schmeling as a member of Fallschirmjäger Regiment 3 (3rd Parachute Regiment ) took part in the air assault on Crete. During the jump he was badly hurt and he spent some months in a military hospital.

There was a large pictorial write-up regarding his service in the "Im Reih Und Glieh" section of one of the old "Signal" magazines. Perhaps someone here has access to those magazines and could give us a post here on the forum about it.

Hi Dan,

I still think he was injured in a bad jump he made. I read about this in some book few years ago but the title I cant recollect anymore.

I haven't read Schmeling's bio so this info might be wrong after all. If you could direct me towards you sources I'd be grateful.

Here are also some web sites which state Schmeling was injured in a bad jump. I know, it's not much, but at this time it's all have  :

There's a book about the invasion of Crete, Ten Days To Destiny. I believe it talks a bit about Schmeling.

American POW friend of Schmeling

Aha! Glad I noticed this post. I met an old fellow who is a friend to a re-enactment unit in Florida who was taken prisoner by the Germans. Besides gaining some weight, Smitty got to work out and stay fit. He was an amateur boxer.
He met and became friends with Schmeling and I don´t know if his story has ever been written. He loves to talk, so perhaps someone could give him a call.

Please post a follow-up and let me know how he´s doing. He may not recognize my name, so tell him a friend of Reagan´s put you onto him.

Also, my dad was in the PTO, sunk at Okinawa, never had a nice thing to say about enemies of the US, but even he is convinced that black Joe´s gloves were loaded in the Schmeling rematch just to humiliate Germany with her theories of Aryan superiority.

Here is a link to an earlier discussion we had about Schmelling. It has photos and more links.
