The city was named Verteidigungbereich (defense area?), when there weren't any fortress-like installation present in it. The mission was nevertheless the same - defend till the last man. The Germans used several definitions for their fortified cities: Fester Platz (fortified town), Ortsstützpunkt, Verteidigungsbereich and Festung.

Thanks guys, I'm glad that I could help. Actually, I forget where I got the information from. It was in one of my old files and I happend to come across it recently.

Like I said, it has some holes in it but from what I've seen in the last couple of posts, others are trying to complete the list or even add to it.

Thanks,

Doug

Good lists. I have one question. Why are Danzig and Königsberg (sp?) seperate "Festungen". I thought that was the same city/ different name.

Additional lists that I have...

Here are additional lists that I've came across. Some of the commanders started off as Commandants for various cities of which ended up being designated "Fortresses".

Again, these lists may overlap the others I've posted. Also, some of the dates might be off, or listing of commanders is out of sequence. I was just keeping a master list and every time I came across a name and a date, I just added it under the appropriate city or town.

Perhaps someone could take all the lists, compare them, make a master list for everyone.

Thanks,

Doug

Additional lists

#38

Post by Schloss Adler » 10 Sep 2003, 21:21

Hi, here are some additional lists. Some of these towns had commandants but ended becoming fortified places later in the war.

Again, these may overlap some of my previous postings. Some of the dates may be wrong or overlap. The listing of the commanders may be out of sequence.

Perhaps someone could take all of the lists, compare them, and furnish a master list.

Thanks,

Doug

then include "Metz" and the many towns along the West Wall that ended up so fortitfied,. I would say they were the last "festungs" and towns like Kustrin and such really were not "festungs" except in Hitler's mind.
Festung "Metz" was properly a fortress with two belts of forts build between 1870 and 1914.
and a fortress in the sense of the defense of the Reich (unless Metz was not german but french annexed town).
The XIII SS AK was part of the german units in front of the XX US corps of the Patton army.
Fight in Metz area started in september 44 and ended in november 44.
the last Festung kommandant was SS Staf Kemper former cdt of the signal school of NCO of Waffen SS.
