Good evening everyone, This is becoming interesting. Counting only the active generals, Heer and Luftwaffe, I have 160 names. Heer - 128 and LW 28. I don't think we should count the generals who were Zbf or A.D. If anyone wants to include the A.D. Austrian generals or the Tannenberg generals, the total increases by 343 names, so I will stay with my 160 names. Overall, our numbers are very similar. What do the rest of you think about counting ONLY the generals who were active at any time during the war? Harry

Hi,

HFK: you are right, it is to discuss. My interest is to know all Austrian generals who were allowed to wear German uniform. As we see in fact is in the "identification of generals" thread sometimes pics for identification from which you dont know wether the displayed general was a.D., z.V., char. or whatever. So it would be a fine instrument to have a file stock of all generals and as many as possible pics of them. But that is just my special interest. You will have another sight and will be right with it too.

HFK: if you would have some more names of Austrian Tannenberg-generals I would be very happy if you could post them here.

Gareth: if you mean Theordor Brantner, yes I have found quite a nice pic of him in a book and will try to scan it later in the afternoon because I have to leave now. I have found one of Genlt Dr. Ing. Leitner too. Hope they will come in good quality.

Regards

Guten morgen Christian,
Here are a few names of generals who were not accepted into the German army.
Enzmann and Brantner retired in 1936, before the Anschluss.
Zaiser and Till were not accepted for political reliability reasons and were retired in 1938.
I have no information on Marian Vessely and Zipfel.
I do have the name Alois Vesel, but I think he retired before 1938.
As far as Tannenberg generals, I can't think of any Austrian generals who qualified, mainly because Austria was not involved in the Battle of Tannenberg.

Hi Christian,

I have reviewed your detailed additions and I can add some more addition to your work, which is much appreciated:

Haselmay[e]r Theodor Edler von Fernstein, Genlt (9): Haselmayr instead of Haselmayer
Schäfer [Hugo], Genlt (38): first name Hugo missing, identical with GM (58)
Schönherr Otto ([Edler] von Schönleiten), Genlt (27): according to Rangliste 1918 "Edler" is missing
Wittas Paul [(Ritter von)], Genlt (41) according to Rangliste 1918 "Ritter von" is missing

Longin [Anton], GM (18) --> transfer into Luftwaffe in 1938
Jesser Kurt [(von)], GM (23): according to Rangliste 1918 "von" is missing
Schäfer Hugo, GM (58): = Genlt Schäfer identical with Genlt (38)
Schmidt, Adalbert (von), GM: is missing. GM Adalbert von Schmidt was transferred into the German Heer on 15.03.1938 and had to retire due to health reasons as per as 31/10/1938. A detailed overview of his career was researched by me using his personnel file in the Vienna war archive; see below. I have excluded the detailed medical reason, however.

As regards GL Adalbert Mikulicz I have forgotten to look him up in the 1918 rank list. I have received some info that his detailled designation of nobility is missing. Maybe somebody with a 1918 rank list could look him up?

Brilliant work! But how about Generals der Waffen-SS?
Is it too mentally difficult for the Austrians? :?

Lieber Blechtrommler,
they are all wellknown - but this is totally off topic in this thread

Hi to all!

Thank you very much for your feedback and your input. I will reply as far as I can within the next following minutes. For the first I begin with the pic of Theodor Brantner.

It shows him als General der Kavallerie in service dress.

Now some replies:

HFK - Tannenberg generals:

it appears that many of the brevet ranks which were bestowed to former k.u.k. officers and generals were given in close connection ith the 25 years Tannenberg anniversery. Not FOR Tannenberg but just using the event for handing out the documents. That is what I mentioned with "Tannenberg generals".

My question were if anybody of the members here could provide a list of the Tannenberg promotions.

Thank you very much Christian, for the pics, especially of Brantner. He has been much sought after by many of us here on the Forum for 7 years (!!), and until now the only pic found was a drawing. You have resolved a very, very prolonged frustration!

Very best regards,

VJK
