Re your post 22 November 2002, your information Allerberger is incorrect, he arrived at Voroshilovsk as sMG gunner 8th July 1943 direct from basic traning course, took up duty as sniper GJR/144 19 days later.

that is interesting, where does the info come from, the date which I quoted came from his own 1967 interview with Hauptmann Hans Widhofner who was preparing research on sniping and interviewed 3 of the top German snipers. The interviews are widely published in sniping books.

My grandfather was trained as a sniper, but he became only a normal rifle, later a MG42

Official wear : on the right upper sleeve (above all other badges [Jäger or Gebirgsjäger if so])
