Award Lists – German Recipients of Hungarian Orders

#1

Post by USAF1986 » 20 Dec 2003, 21:50

I thought I’d start this thread to inquire if any of the forum members, particularly our Hungarian colleagues, might have access to official award rolls listing the German recipients of the following Hungarian orders from 1935 to the end of the war:

• Order of St. Stephan
• Order of Merit
• Order of the Holy Crown of Hungary (instituted in 1942)

Best Regards,
Shawn

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 23 Dec 2003, 07:06

Gentlemen!

Oberst i.G. Graf Johann Adolf von Kielmansegg had two high neck orders from Rumania and Hungary. They were:

Kommandeurkreuz des Koniglich-Rumanischen Ordens der Krone mit Schwerter (00.01.1944)

Komturkreuz des Koniglich-Ungarischen Ordens der Stefanskrone mit Schwerter (00.00.1944)

That's a start from now.

Regards,

Edward

Ludwig Heinrich Gaedcke

Fellows.

Generalmajor Ludwig Heinrich Gaedcke(RK) was awarded the Komturkreuz Ungarischer Verdienstorden mit Schwertern am Kriegsband on December 12, 1944.

In the battle of Hungary (1944-1945) I believed there were a lots of Germans that were awarded Hungarian orders and decorations. We just have to identified some of them for the time being if its possible.

Two Waffen-SS Generals

#6

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 08 Jan 2004, 03:48

Hello Fellows!

During the battle of Budapest, Hungary, the two Waffen-SS Cavalry Divisions the 8th and the 22nd were very much fighting in that city against the Soviets. Brigadefuehrer Joachim Rumohr, CO of the 8th and Brigadefuehrer August Zehender, CO of the 22nd were both killed in action. They were both awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross. In my opinion, they were good candidates for one of the high neck orders from Hungary. Also Obergruppenfuehrer Karl von Pfeffer-Wildenbruch, CO of IX SS Mountain Corps in Hungary was probably also awarded a high neck order from that country. He was a holder of the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross. That's just a good guest on my part.

Sincerely,

Edward

Kriegsmarine Recipients.

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 20 Jan 2004, 04:19

Dear fellows,

Looks like I'm going to supply imformation and questions for awhile since no one is helping in this 'Hungarian Decorations' topic. I know that the men from the Heer,Luftwaffe, and the Waffen-SS were awarded high orders from Hungary. What about the men from the Kriegsmarine? Did they did any assistant to the small Hungarian Navy and won any decorations from Hungary? What were the German Admirals' and full Captains' names that supplied assistant to that navy?

I don't know if these orders were open to foreign recipients. Since none of our Budapest based friends answered, the chance is they might not!

Best Regards!

Here is Generalleutnant Max Pemsel displaying the Hungarian Order of Merit, Commander’s Cross on the War Decoration Ribbon with Swords. This photo was taken upon his surrender in northern Italy while serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Ligurian Army commanded by Italian Marshal Rudolfo Graziani.

Here's a link to a photo of Generalleutnant Werner Sanne displaying the Hungarian Order of Merit, Commander's Cross on the War Decoration Ribbon with Swords. Per photographic evidence, Sanne also held the neck-worn Croat Order of the Iron Trefoil, 1st Class.

These are the names I have so far for the Merit Order (Érdemrend/Verdienstorden). A couple of notes: German sources are often unclear regarding whether someone received the swords and the war decoration or just the swords. Also, the award dates, when known, are given, but in many cases the German sources are not clear whether it is the date awarded by the Hungarians or the date it was approved for wear by the Germans. Wartime awards of non-German decorations are not typically included in Personalakten, so most of this list are non-swords awards from the late-1930s.
