Hello,

with 96. ID are necessary supplements!

The sergeant from the Füsilier battalion was called Krenz and not cross. And the first lieutenant from the same battalion was called Krug and not Kruck.

As other supplements three RKT are absent in the list!

Stick:
Most highly Adolf Fischer, leader of 96. ID, May, 1944 lieutenant-colonel i. G. Johannes Deegener, 1st GenStabOffz. 96. ID,

Füsilier battalion:
27.8.1943: I have first lieutenant Laaf in 1944, to him no other answers!

Greeting Tobias

Hello Tobias,

as I understand you posted some corrections on the KC list for the 96. Infanterie-Division
on [page 16] (?)
Yes, the data are the award dates. Listed are the recipients who got the knight's cross
while member of the unit.

I have corrected Kreuz, Wilhelm into Krenz. Thanks for that !

According Veit Scherzer, "Die Ritterkreuzträger", 2005
Adolf Fischer and Johannes Deegener didn't get the KC with 96. Inf.Div.
No Leutnant Laaf listed.
Kruck is listed with this name.

Could you give a source or another reason for your corrections on Fischer, Deegener,
Kruck and Laaf ?

Hello "Luchs",

I employ me intensively with history of the 96. Infantry division!

I have the information, which I used in the last contribution, from
the division chronicle of the 96!

Hartwig Pohlmann, "Geschichte der 96. Infanterie-Division 1939-1945", Hans-Henning Podzun Verlag, Seite 434

The author calls only soldiers who got the honor as relative of the division!

The exact information from the book:

-Oberstleutnant i.G. Johannes Deegener, 1. Generalstabsoffizier der 96. ID, am 27.8.43 posthum verliehen, am 31.7.43 gefallen

-Oberst Adolf Fischer, Führer der 96. ID, im Mai 1944 verliehen, 1947 erschossen worden

The book locate Kurt as Krug and not Kruck!

Who has now the errors?

best regards
Tobias

Hello Tobias,

your info on 96. Infanterie-Division is much appreciated !!

Let’s try to get a solution from this conflicting info.

Veit Scherzer, “Die Ritterkreuzträger”, 2005 has :

Deegener, Johannes 22.08.1943 Obtlt i.G. Führer Jäg.Rgt 49 [ -> 28. Jäg.Div ]
+ 31.07.1943 am Lodozskoje ozero/SU [ = Ladogasee ]

Fischer, Adolf 04.05.1944 Oberst Kdr Gren.Rgt 459 [ -> 251. Inf.Div ]

In general, I think, it is important to keep in mind ;
cross-checking of different sources often is inevitable to get precise results, especially
concerning persons/names and data.
Errors could be also errors (or incomplete info) of sources !
It is a matter of fact, that many errors/misleading info was transferred from source to
source, from book to book the last decades ; it is a phenomenon of science / world of
publishing.
To me, one main aspect and great opportunity of this fantastic forum, is to stop this
“error-transfer”, when we are able to do.

Based on this general statement two further statements :
1. The Scherzer book from the year 2005 to me is a trustworthy source, representing the
newest (re-done) scientific research.
2. The divisional history of 96. Inf.Div from Pohlmann is from the year 1959.
I’m not in the position to criticize or correct this work without further research, but I want
to point out, that in general you have to be careful concerning parts of the content of this
early after the war written histories, often from remembrance and without sufficient
(=available) sources. Especially concerning our issue here, lists of KC holders, I realized
“uncorrect” lists, means recipients are listed, who got the KC with other divisions
(example: Ritgen, Pz.Lehr).

Unfortunately, until next week I’ve no access to the Biblio series on infantry, to eventually
find detailed KC action info on Fischer and Deegener.
Maybe someone else can help here now.

Deegener obviously seems to be a case of listing a divisional member in the divs KC list,
which should mean he got the KC with another division later.
Otherwise there should be the story of his KC deed told within the book (?)
It seems clear, that he was Ia 96. ID in 1941-43, then got the KC leading Jäg.Rgt 49 in july 1943,
KIA at Ladogasee ; look here :
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Per ... nerJ-R.htm

For Fischer , it seems to be a longer time between KC action (GR 459 / 251. ID, division disbanded
nov 1943) and award date (04.05.1944). Not uncommon.
In addition, some unclearness arised about his positions in 1944.
I made a request to the forum for this data here
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=113651
Matching info from Keilig and Biblio series for command -> 367. ID later in 1944
According Biblio series arrived 03.03.1944 to temporarily command 96. Inf.Div.

Leaves it open about his KC action. We will get this :)

Luchs,

Just a MINOR and humble comment for Kampfgeschwader 6.

10. Lehnert, Willy 05.04.1944 Oberfeldwebel Bordfunker im Stab/K.G. 6

I was under the impression that Willy Lehnert was also part of the Hogeback crew, thus making it the only bomber crew of the war in which all members received the RK. I may be mistaken.

Here is a clip of Hogeback and Glasner during the latters RK ceremony. This is one of four photos I have of the ceremony. I do not see Lehnert in the series. Look at the awards!

FMModel,
thanks for addition ! You are right, it is stated in many sources.
Have pointed out this remarkable fact in K.G. 6 list on page 17 .

While working a bit fast towards the end of the year :) , I didn't integrate every remarkable
detail into the lists. Now, most of the basic work is done, we can add interesting and
remarkable details like this.

Yes, great photo, you posted ; "heavy" uniforms, double cuff titles !
The members of the crew got their KC at different times ; but for sure in 1944 they have
been in the air as a crew.

Following photo with Lehnert to the right is from (Hogeback entry)

Hello "Luchs",

I will write you an answer when I (will) be back at home! At the moment I can't read my source and I will be answer you when I be back home!

At the moment only so much:

Your objection with the early source is entitled!

I thank you for your application!

Guilherme,
welcome to the forum !
I quoted your post as an own topic in this ABR subforum.
More users to see it and better chance to get the info you look for.

sgtvoss,
also welcome to the forum !
thanks for comment !
Yes, Fallschirmjäger will be listed. As there was only 1.Fallsch.Jäg.Div in the beginning
with several Rgts assigned, my thoughts so far are to list only Fallsch-Jäg-Regimenter.
Should be interesting as an own category.

Tobias,

concerning Deegener from this source :
"Die Ritterkreuzträger der Deutschen Wehrmacht 1939-1945"
Teil III , Infanterie , Band 4 (C-Dow) , Thomas/Wegmann , Biblio Verlag, Osnabrück 1998

Dienststellung: Oberstleutnant im Generalstab und mit der Führung des
Jägerregiments 49 beauftragt; [remark from a colleague: D.h. er mag durchaus der 96. ID
angehört haben. Zur Zeit der Verleihung nahm er dort aber keine Aufgaben wahr.]

Zum Verleihungsgrund:( Biblio Zit.)

"Obslt i. G. Deegener hatte im Juli 1943 für den erkrankten
Regimentskommandeur die Führung des Breslauer JgRgts 49 übernommen. 5 Tage
wehrte er mit seinen Jägern schwerste Angriffe ab. Im Gegenangriff führte er
das Rgt am Brennpunkt der Kämpfe in vorderster Linie und übernahm nach
Verwundung des Bataillonskommandeurs auch die Führung des im Schwerpunkt
eingesetzten Bataillons. Bei diesem Gegenangriff wurde er schwer verwundet".

translation :
Deegener took over command of Jäg.Rgt 49 for the rgt cdr who was fallen ill in july 1943.
During 5 days he was repulsing the heaviest attacks with his Jäger.
He was leading the rgt into a counter-attack in foremost front line and after the wounding
of the Btl-Kdr also took over the lead of the btl which was fighting in the focal point.
With this occassion he was wounded heavily.

It is understandable why he is listed in the chronicle's KC list, just leaving his post as
Ia 96. ID to take over temporary command of Jäg.Rgt 49.
As he got the KC for action with this rgt, reported above and according the "rule"
(let's follow this) : the unit determines the recipient/award I really would count him
with Jäg.Rgt 49 / 28. Jäg.Div.

* belongs to a group of soldiers who have "credibly proven" ("glaubhaft nachgewiesen") to have been awarded the decoration. The "Nachauflage" (1992) [addendum/2nd ed.] of the book by Horst Scheibert lists 50 recipients like that. 11 of them have been listed in the new standard work by Patzwall/Scherzer (2001,2003,2007) in the meatime and therefore can be regarded as confirmed. To enable further research, open for final confirmations as well as for rejections/proof of the contrary the status of the remaining 39 soldiers should be regarded as "credibly proven" per Scheibert and therefore this group is listed here for the time being.
