re 8.SS-Kav.Div.

KG Zehender

After the reorganization from SS-Kav.Brig. into SS-Kav.Div. in summer 1942 the division was subsequently organized in two KGs: KG Z(ehender) and KG L(ombard) (Trang: The "Florian Geyer" Division, p.85).

KG Fegelein

Another ad-hoc formation formed from parts of the Brig.Stab of the old SS-Kav.Brig. and various mostly Polizei units (Bayer: Die Kavallerie der waffen-SS, p.259; see also this previous discussion http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=53470 )

SS-Kav.Rgt.17

Formed on 24 June 1942 as SS-Kav.Rgt.3. Renumbered in SS-Kav.Rgt.17 on 22 October 1943. Detached from the division in October 1943. Finally added to 22.SS-Freiw.Kav.Div. in May 1944 (Trang: The "Florian Geyer" Division, p.191). So, apart for (parent unit - 8.SS):
Geier, Willi, 11.05.1944, SS-Hstuf., 1./SS-Kav.Rgt. 17
all others should be counted under 22.SS-FKD.
RE : 8. SS-Kav.Div / KG Zehender / SS-Kav.Rgt 17 lists by Shawn on [page 48] and response by Marko

Thank you both, gentlemen, for your info and efforts ! :D
I tried to evaluate and understand all this and got the following results and listings so far (please check for confirmation and/or correction) :

1. lists :
(SS-)Kampfgruppe Fegelein : 1 OL ; DKiG : 5 [page 13]
8. SS-Kavallerie-Division "Florian Geyer" : DKiG : 60 , NKiG : 4 , EBS : 1 [page 48]
SS-Kav.Rgt 17 / 22. SS-Frw-Kav.Div : DKiG : 8 , NKiG : 1 [page 48] to add to final 22.SS-Div list

2. Kampfgruppe Fegelein :
is listed now with the SS-Kav.Divs on [page 13] as an independent unit
Just for this reason I hadn't listed the oakleaves of Fegelein in any list so far
I have crossed out 5 DKiG recipients of the KG from the 8.SS-Div list and added them to the KG list
Marko, very helpful to know and to have this thread ! Absolutely essential find ! :D
I have written on [page 13] what could be regarded as confirmed and agreeable ; in addition I opened the possibility to go on with the thread. The cavalry recipients should be done. To eventually find recipients of the other KG units it depends on how the composition is clear or getting clearer.

3. 8. SS-Kav.Div "Florian Geyer" :
due to the straight lineage "SS-Kavallerie-Brigade" -> "SS-Kavallerie-Division" -> 8. SS-Kav.Div "Florian Geyer" all recipients of these units are counted and listed with the division (KC list already, other major awards now) like done in all other similar div developments.
I have worked within the post on [page 48] to handle the stuff.

4. SS-Kav.Rgt 17 :
Tessin has the following : Kgr SS-Gruppenführer Gille (Masse SS "W") [="Wiking" / Bernd] 15.04.1944 LVI. Pz.Korps / 2. Armee
we might choose to count the recipients to this KG if in fact attached.
Being the basic cadre of 22. SS-Kav.Div I would tend to class Rgt 17 to the division like Marko said.

5. Kampfgruppe Zehender :
Tessin has just the following : 5.3.1943 KG Zehender (2 btls SS-Kav.Div) / 45. Inf.Div / 2. Pz.Armee
also on : 18.3. , 24.3. , 27.3. , 3.4.
What is our choice here ?
independent unit ? or SS-Kav.Div ? or subordinated to 45. ID ?

Thanks and regards
Bernd

Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold/Silver (no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the 340. Infanterie-Division / 340. Volks-Grenadier-Division.

Note: Per Lexikon der Wehrmacht, Divisionsgruppe 327 with Regimentsgruppen 595 and 596 was assigned to the 340. Inf.Div. from late-1943 to mid-1944. As such, I included in this list a single soldier of Regimentsgruppe 596 (Imm) who received the German Cross in Gold during this period.

Question: Was Werkstattkompanie 340 a component of this division? If so, then the German Cross in Silver recipient (Lösche) is correctly listed. If not, please remove.

As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!

Best regards,
Shawn

EDIT: Kassner added - Art.Rgt. 327 transferred to 340. Inf.Div. from 327. Inf.Div. on 1 Oct 1943.

Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold (no German Crosses in Silver; no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the 167. Infanterie-Division / 167. Volks-Grenadier-Division.

Note: The remnants of the division formed Divisionsgruppe 167 with Regimentsgruppen 315 and 331. The following German Cross in Gold holder from Divisionsgruppe 167 should be counted under the 376. Infanterie-Division:
listed / Bernd
März, August, 02.07.1944, Hptm. d.R., Div.Gruppe 167

The following German Cross in Gold holders from Grenadier-Regiment 315 are also counted under the 376. Infanterie-Division (regiment transferred to 376. Inf.Div. on 1 Aug 1944):

Anhalt, Georg, 29.01.1945, Hptm., II./Gren.Rgt. 315
Edenhofer, Josef, 16.06.1944, Ofw., 5./Gren.Rgt. 315

As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!

Best regards,
Shawn

Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold (no German Crosses in Silver; no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the Jäger-Divisionen listed below.

Please see the question I posed below.

As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!

listed with 111. Inf.Div [page 31] ; Radf.Abt 117 (AA 117 first) was an origin unit of 111. Inf.Div, later redesignated Div.Füs.Btl (AA) 111 [source: Tessin] / Bernd

11.Panzerdivision

KC : two are to cross out

Streich, Johannes , Pz.Rgt 15
Pz.Rgt 15 till 04.09.1940 was attached to 5. Pz.Div. Oberst Streich was awarded for actions in France with 5. PD (same award date “31.01.1941” like Hans Christern, Kdr II./Pz.Rgt 31 btw)

Brehme, Gerhard , Pz.Abt 52
I./Pz.Rgt 15 was choosen to be equipped and trained with the new Pz. V “Panther” and renamed Pz.Abt 52 on 15.03.1943 ; after operation “Zitadelle” renamed again I./Pz.Rgt 15 and re-attached to 11. PD on 21.08.1943.
Together with Pz.Abt 51 it formed Pz.Rgt von Lauchert (“Panther”), Heerestruppe.
So, the KC is to count with this Rgt.

DKiG : to add

Lauchert von, Meinrad 05.09.1943 Major Pz.Rgt 15
Noack, Erich 19.08.1943 Oberfeldwebel 6./Pz.Rgt 15

Schlotter, Bahnhofswachabt 2 Oppeln – 30.11.44 , is not listed by V.S.
Interestingly Wolf,Walter, 03.08.1943 is listed on both the 4. and 11. PD lists ; V.S. has him with 11. PD. He was in discussion recently during the final round for 4. PD !

Two – Berger and Winkler / I./Pz.Rgt von Lauchert – should be classified to Pz.Rgt von Lauchert (not listed by V.S.).
Meinrad von Lauchert himself IMO should be counted with „his“ Rgt, too.
Most probably awarded for “Zitadelle” actions and seems to be officially awarded when in command of Pz.Rgt 15 again/already.

DKiS : to add

Jeck, Peter 29.04.1945 Heeres-Hauptwerkmeister Pz.Werkstatt.Kp 11

Urban, Robert San.Kp 2/61 is confirmed.

NKiG :

Schlotter, 05.02.1944 Gefreiter 7./Pz.Gren.Rgt 111 is confirmed.
Schülz : correct name : Schütz , date : 00.00.0000
Verlei : date : 00.00.0000

special case:

Donnhauser, Anton, 10.02.1944, Major, Führer Pz.Gren.Rgt. 111

Geboren: 08.04.1913
Ort: Wien

EK II: 29.09.1939
EK I: 29.04.1941
DKiG: 13.05.1943 (378/21), Hptm., Kdr. II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 111 / 11. Pz.Div.
RK: 18.07.1943

Note: this case took a little longer to get cleared up. Donnhauser is not listed by Veit Scherzer as there is no Nachweis for him in the Kartei of BA-MA. A correspondence with Manfred Dörr dug out that he is a very special case as his widow was able to present his official award document. So he is definitly accepted by Dörr and., as he is the authorative expert on this subject, we will go conform with him. A big thank you for all who helped to work this out by mesages and phontalk: Bernd, Shawn, Veit Scherzer and Manfred Dörr 8-)

additions :

RK KVK mS : Reuschel, Kurt 08.12.1944 Oberfeldwebel 7./Pz.Rgt 15
(sorrowly still no additions on him in Dieter's great RKdKVK-Thread)

Hard task but good job

GJR 139 split away from the division in January 1942 to become heerestruppe taking with it I./GAR 112 and a kompanie of pionier. It stayed behind in Finland when the division returned to the continent to be replaced by GJR 144.
So those DKiG holders from the regiment like Hans Rohr cannot really be 'counted' as coming under the 3 Geb.Div.

The oakleaves of Eduard Dietl however really ought to be.

This is the only RKT I can find from among the Marine Inf. Divisionen. Er, let me rephrase that… this is the only RKT that Schmitz, Thies, Wegmann, and Zweng could find among the Marine Infanterie Divisionen.

Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold/Silver (no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the 337. Infanterie-Division / 337. Volks-Grenadier-Division.

Question: Should the following German Cross in Gold holder be counted with the 337. Inf.Div.?
Yes, Stug.Abt 1337 = 2.Kp/Pz.Jäg.Abt 137 in 1944 [source: Tessin] ; Pz.Jäg.Abt 299 under command of Korps-Abt G / Bernd
Britzke von Achim, 07.09.1944, Oblt., Stu.Gesch.Abt. 1337

Note #1: Per Lexikon der Wehrmacht, Divisionsgruppe 113 with Regimentsgruppen 260 and 261 was assigned to the 337. Inf.Div. from 2 Nov 1943-Jul 1944. As such, I included in this list those soldiers of Regimentsgruppen 260 and 261 who received the German Cross in Gold during this period.
Jacobs, Rgt.Grp 260, shifted to Korps-Abt G / Bernd

Note #2: The remnants of the 337. Inf.Div., in turn, formed Divisionsgruppe 337. The following German Cross in Gold holder from the divisionsgruppe should be counted under Korps-Abteilung G:
listed / Bernd
Motsch, Willi, 30.09.1944, Major, I./Div.Gruppe 337

As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!
Lieder and von Reden shifted to Korps-Abt G [page 41] / Bernd
Best regards,
Shawn

Simon,

thanks for the hints !

The above list is from "Die Deutschen Divisionen 1939 - 1945", called just DDD here the last time.
I call it ??? :) We noticed such a lot of errors and irritations with this work !!
I am very thankfull that Jeff is providing these lists for re-ckecking. It turned out that they at least are quite complete.
We have learned to use them in this sense and have learned to read them "carefully".
They have not turned out to be a reference in the context of this project !

So, the most of this "lesser award" lists are not re-checked yet and listed preliminary. Really thousands of DKiG, DKiS, NKiG and EBS recipients, this section is much in progress. It is getting more and more detailed and the lists hopefully by that will become more precise. For an add & corr names, dates and units are needed.

So, as long as nobody is evaluating a list accurately I put this on the "re-check agenda" and work on it according to my time capacity.

I take a look again on the oakleaves for Dietl ; think, you are right.

regards, Bernd

Sure thing Bernd, i use DDD myself and it's a good enough work to make a start on the lesser awards at least.

forgive me for not going through every post of this mega thread but have you set a baseline for how to 'award' a decoration to a unit?

ie. the recipient had to be serving with the unit upon award (which could be sometime after the deed) or the unit with which the recipient was serving when he carried out the actions which led to his award?

Also (and i've seen it mentioned in one or two posts) what to do with detached units serving under another division or heerestruppen attached to a division?

Note: The remnants of the 339. Inf.Div. formed Divisionsgruppe 339 with Regimentsgruppen 691 and 692. The following German Cross in Gold holders from the divisionsgruppe should be counted under Korps-Abteilung C:

RE : 11. Panzer-Division add & corr

Thanks, Jan-Hendrik for this great effort and teamwork ! Resulting in final lists for this highly decorated Pz.Div and producing a new list for an interesting unit : Pz.Rgt von Lauchert

Knight’s Cross : crossed out

Streich, Johannes ; correct : Kdr Pz.Rgt 15 / 5. Pz.Div (France) -> added to 5. Pz.Div KC list on [page 35]

Brehme, Gerhard ; correct : Pz.Abt 52 / Pz.Rgt von Lauchert (operation „Zitadelle“)
first two Panther-Abteilungen formed Pz.Rgt von Lauchert for operation „Zitadelle“ ; using staff Pz.Rgt 39 with Major von Lauchert in command
(II.Abt/Pz.Rgt 39 stayed with 17.PD)
command structure : Pz.Rgt von Lauchert / Pz-Brigade 10 (Oberst Decker) / XXXXVIII. (48.) Pz.Korps / 4. Pz.Armee / HGr Süd

Absolutely agree to list Pz.Rgt von Lauchert as an independent unit / Heerestruppe.
I have added the list to the Pz-Brigaden listing on [page 20] We have a further choice lateron to class it to Pz-Brigade 10 when this unit is done once.

German Cross in Gold :

crossed out Berger and Winkler -> added to Pz.Rgt von Lauchert DKiG list on [page 20]
added von Lauchert as well to this list. D’accord with all you have stated, Jan-Hendrik.

added Noack , 6./Pz.Rgt 15 to the list.

Schlotter, Hans , Bahnhofswachabt 2 Oppeln [7./Pz.Gren.Rgt 111] – 30.11.44
crossed out : he is listed - confirmed by Dörr and Scherzer - as NKiG recipient, awarded on 05.02.1944 with 7./Pz.Gren.Rgt 111 ; he made his way on the DKiG list by an add provided by Jeff from DDD (on page 36) ; discussed then that a footnote refers to the NKiG entry ; to make the story short : obviously Schlotter should be listed on the DKiG list of DDD and was listed on the DKiG list as well with the add “7./Pz.Gren.Rgt 111” ; most probably he was posted to this “Bahnhofswachabt 2 Oppeln” and got the DKiG there on 30.11.1944

Wolf, Walter , 03.08.1943 , Oberfeldwebel , 9./Pz.Rgt 15 / 11. PD is correct IMO
All is possible, he made his way to both lists via Scheibert ! :)
crossed out from the 4. Pz.Div DKiG list on [page 29]
argument : II./Pz.Rgt 35 / 4. PD was transferred and renamed III./Pz.Rgt 15 / 11. PD in april 1942 , transferred back to 4. Pz.Div on 14.11.1943 first.
This time period covers the award date “03.08.1943” absolutely. So, the wrong entry “9./Pz.Rgt 35” is to read 9./Pz.Rgt 15 !

German Cross in Silver : added Jeck, Peter

long time question is answered now ; my answer to Shawn about Werkstatt-Kompanie 11 was wrong !
obviously not a unit of Pz.Rgt 11 / 6. Pz.Div -> crossed out there

Close Combat Clasp in Gold :

Schütz and Verlei updated
special case:

A big thank you for all who helped to work this out by mesages and phontalk: Bernd, Shawn, Veit Scherzer and Manfred Dörr
Donnhauser listed. What to say.. Great piece of research and a 100% fact based confirmation. 8-) :D
This is a case of an award which has to be officially accepted because an original award document is available (checked by experts and approved) although no proof is to find in BA-MA.

added Reuschel, RK KVKmS

11. Pz.Div , now : 52 KC (45 RK + 4 EL + 3 SW) [page 8]
[DKiG : 140 , DKiS : 6 , NKiG : 28 , RK KVKmS : 1 , page 28]

Thanks and regards
Bernd

Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold (no German Crosses in Silver; no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the 293. Infanterie-Division.

Note: The remnants of the 293. Inf.Div. formed Divisionsgruppe 293 with Regimentsgruppen 511 and 512. The following German Cross in Gold holders from the divisionsgruppe should be counted under Korps-Abteilung A:
listed / Bernd
Gräfe, Walter, 16.06.1944, Ofw. d.R., 7./Rgt.Gr. 512
Riedel, Werner, 15.06.1944, Fw. d.R., 5./Rgt.Gr. 512

Based on the award dates, I presume Ackermann, Holzheimer, Michalsky, Mülsch, and Stolte should also be counted under Korps-Abteilung A; however, I’ve listed them with the 293. Inf.Div. for the time being.
Michalsky and Stolte shifted to Korps-Abt A [page 40] ; others marked blue here due to their unit designation not used with "A" / Bernd
As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!

Best regards,
Shawn
