Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold (no German Crosses in Silver; no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the infantry divisions listed below.

As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!

Best regards,
Shawn

333. Infanterie-Division

Note: The remnants of the 333. Inf.Div. formed Divsionsgruppe 333 with Regimentsgruppen 679 and 680, which was subordinated to the 294. Inf.Div. I researched Scheibert, but failed to find any German Cross in Gold/Silver recipients from the divisionsgruppe.

Based on the award dates, I presume Andresen and Schmid should be counted with the 294. Inf.Div.; however, I’ve listed them with the 333. Inf.Div. for the time being. Although Zimmermann received the German Cross in Gold after the dissolution of the 333. Inf.Div., based on his unit of assignment (Aufkl.Abt. 333), I believe he is most likely a late award rather than one to be counted with the 294. Inf.Div.
none under command of 294. ID after my research and conclusion : AA 333 was used and transfered to 294. ID, but renamed Div.Füs.Btl 333, so Zimmermann should be indeed a late award ; staff Art.Rgt 333 was used and transfered (therefore the Rgt called "AR 333") along with only III. Abt / AR 333 ; but I., II. and IV. Abt kept their unit designation AR 294 ; so, Andresen and Schmid should be awarded for the time period still under command of 333. ID [source: Tessin] / Bernd

RE : 216. ID and 223. ID [page 57] : handled ; few recipients shifted, few marked red

RE : 90. leichte Afrika-Division / 90. Panzergrenadier-Division [page 57]
USAF1986 wrote:
Please note the “Research Point” under the 1941-1943 divisional listing. ...
Research Point: I take it this pair of German Cross in Gold holders should be counted under the 1941-1943 division. Note the unit is listed as “190” in Scheibert. Is this perhaps a typo or was there an Aufkl.Abt. with this number at this date (I thought Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 190 was formed on 1 March 1944)?
Bernhard, [no first name listed], 12.05.1943, Hptm., Aufkl.Abt. 190
Zecherle, Konrad, 23.06.1943, Lt. d.R., 1./Pz.Aufkl.Abt. 190
According to Tessin you are right, Shawn. Same conclusion by me.
It was Pz.AA 90 in Africa. -> Zecherle, KC 10.05.1943 Pz.AA 90 [Scherzer]
Div.Kdo Sardinien (Sardinien units in succession to the div) was formed on 23.04.1943 , but it didn’t have a „Pz.AA 190“.

So, North Africa was a theatre of ad-hoc and mixed units and we see some different unit designations here (no surprise).
It is a typo or during the last days in Africa the unit designation was changed into “190” (like the divisional Art.Rgt and Pz.Jäg.Abt) and this change found his way into the official files. Let’s list them like Scheibert until we find a confirmed correct version.
...Buchholz, Hans-Günther, 24.04.1943, Oblt., 3./Pz.Gren.Rgt. Afrika
Menton, Otto 08.01.1943 Oberst Kdr Pz.Gren.Rgt. Afrika ...
Panzergrenadier-Regiment Afrika
Oberst Menton should be listed with PGR Afrika -> Heerestruppe
Buchholz should be listed with 164. leichte Afrika-Division

both not with verstärktes Afrika-Regiment 361 which is a different Rgt and was renamed Pz.Gren.Rgt 361 in july 1942.

Pz.Gren.Rgt Afrika was formed by restructuring and renaming of Sonderverband 288
with order of 06.08.1942 , in fact on 31.10.1942. Getting Heerestruppe
It was attached to 164. leichte Afrika-Division (replacing Rgt 125) on 26.02.1943
[sources : Tessin ; http://www.deutsches-afrikakorps.de/alt ... zgrafr.htm]
So, Menton clear ; Buchholz we need a proof ; let’s keep him listed with 164. Div preliminary.

I have added Menton and Buchholz to the lists on [page 13]

There PGR Afrika is listed as Heerestruppe unit with :
Meyer, Jochen , KC 31.03.1943 -> proof needed as well, if Rgt / Heerestruppe or with 164. le Afrika-Div already.

While researching the award holders of the 387. Inf.Div.. I came across this German Cross in Gold holder with a very late award date:

Neuenhaus, Friedrich-Peter, 31.01.1945, Hptm., III./Gren.Rgt. 542

I presume this soldier should be counted under the 258. Inf.Div. Any thoughts on this issue would be much appreciated!

Best regards,
Shawn

Here are the recipients of the German Cross in Gold (no German Crosses in Silver; no Close Combat Clasps in Gold in 2006 edition of Dörr) who received their awards while assigned to the infantry divisions listed below.

As always, additions/corrections would be most appreciated!

Best regards,
Shawn

additions and corrections for 6. and 19. Panzer-Division

#864

Post by Jan-Hendrik » 31 May 2007, 19:25

6. PD :

Bäke is listed as swords holder Pz.Rgt 11 by V.S.

But regarding this discussion it would be more practical ro "run" sPzRgt. Bäke as an extension to 6th PD's list seperatly. Opinions?

DKiG : 3 to add
Richter, Viktor 04.10.1944 Hauptmann I./Pz.Gren.Rgt 114

Sowa, Fritz 15.04.1945 Unteroffizier 1./Pz.Pi.Btl 57

remark : DKiG recipient Horst Scheibert (later Brigadegeneral der Bundeswehr and famous writer, often "used" in this thread! 8-) ) , in the rank of Hptm ,was Führer Pz.Rgt 11 for some days 18.07. – 21.07.1943 !

NKiG :
listed on page 31 is : Richter, Viktor , Obergefreiter
V.S. has him with same data but first name : Franz
“Viktor” maybe a typo ? (see DKiG recipient Richter, Viktor above, rank Hauptmann)

19. PD :

KC : the thread list is including 4 recipients of 19. Inf.Div
Jürgens, Karl , IR 73 / Hippler,Gustav , Pongratz,Johann , Schmidt,Gustav , all IR 74

It would be better to seperate 19.ID and 19.PD in the masterlist (just my humble opinion),

DKiG : 1 to add

award date for NKiG recipient Starha, Friedrich, Major, II./PGR 74 : 00.00.0000
eventually worth a re-check with Dörr, 4th edition
Shawn, could you please look for him ;
and for this one : Richter, Hans-Heinrich, 00.12.1944 Fsch-Pz.Aufkl.Abt 2 "HG"

and this one ? Richter, Viktor or Franz ? ,20.08.1944 Ogefr MG-Schütze 1./PGR 114
NKiG :
listed on page 31 is : Richter, Viktor , Obergefreiter
V.S. has him with same data but first name : Franz
“Viktor” maybe a typo ? (see DKiG recipient Richter, Viktor above, rank Hauptmann)
19. PD :

KC : the thread list is including 4 recipients of 19. Inf.Div
Jürgens, Karl , IR 73 / Hippler,Gustav , Pongratz,Johann , Schmidt,Gustav , all IR 74

It would be better to seperate 19.ID and 19.PD in the masterlist (just my humble opinion),
I absolutely agree, Jan-Hendrik. The solution so far to merge the Pz.Divs with the Inf.Divs they were redesignated from is not ideal. Doesn't look good, it's not working. Although many of them have a common (also written) divisional history the Inf.Divs will be listed seperately now. Better arguments to go this way and in a kind normal and more precise.

I have made these additions. Thanks !
All are the 2. Kp of the divisional Pz.Jäg.Abt ; called Stug.Abt and Pz.Jäg.Kp at different times. Sometimes only this single Pz.Jäg.Kp existed [source : Tessin]

Bernd,

Thank you for making the Pz.Jäg.Kp. additions – much appreciated!

Unfortunately, the 2006 edition of Dörr still lacks a date for Starha’s NKiG.
Richter, Hans-Heinrich, 00.12.1944 Fsch-Pz.Aufkl.Abt 2 "HG"
Here is his complete entry from the 2006 edition of Dörr:

Name: Richter, Hans-Heinrich
Geboren/Ort: 22.06.1920 / Bremen
Dientsgrad: Hauptmann
Dienstellung/Truppenteil: Kompanieführer im Fsch.Jäg.Rgt. 16
Verliehen: 00.12.1944
Anmerkungen: Beglaubigte Soldbuchabschrift sowie eidesstattliche Versicherung vom 02.04.1954 von Oberst a.D. Schirmer liegen vor. Ritterkreuzverleihung nicht nachweisbar im BA.
and this one ? Richter, Viktor or Franz ? ,20.08.1944 Ogefr MG-Schütze 1./PGR 114
His name is listed as Franz in Dörr; all other information is correct as listed.

While reseraching the 116. Panzer-Division in Scheibert/Dörr, I found these award holders that, based on the award dates, should be counted with the 16. Panzergrenadier-Division (page 47), i.e., all awards predated the formation of the 116. Panzer-Division on 28 March 1944.

Best regards,
Shawn
