Heer Security Units

#962

Post by USAF1986 » 14 Jun 2007, 15:50

Here are award holders from various security units of the Heer. I tried to place these in some type of unit subordination, but the project turned out to be more complicated than I anticipated! For the time being, I’ve given up trying to make sense of the organization of security units and, instead, opted to present the “raw data” I dug up. For the most part, this list reflects only those soldiers whose units bore the designation “security”.

Best regards,
Shawn

Speaking of the security divisions, here are the award holders of the infantry-/grenadier regiments assigned to them at various times. As I cannot find the specific dates that the regiments transferred between security and/or regular infantry divisions, I’ve made no attempt at grouping the award holders in anything other than an overall regimental listing. Note: A few awards, that, based on dates, should be counted with the 281. Inf.Div. have been noted in parentheses.

This might be a good project for anyone with solid information on the evolution of the German security divisions.

Best regards,
Shawn

Hello! Does anyone have any awards to add to this list of Panzer-Brigade 150? I’ve provisionally placed Skorzeny’s Honor Roll Clasp with the brigade despite his unit being listed as SS-Jagd-Verbände, which I presume was his parent outfit. Of interest, he has the same award date as Scherf, Wulf and von Foelkersam.

Best regards,
Shawn

Jan-Hendrik,

The 18. Art.Div. – of course! I continually overlook that division for some reason. Thank you!

290. ID list [page 63]
Nordmeyer, Otto, 00.00.1945, Lt, Jagd-Pz.Kp 1290 , listed preliminary
not yet found a final confirmation for this unit

355. ID list [page 63]
single recipient Hofmann, August, shifted to Korps-Abt A

346. ID list [page 63] / in connection to 70. ID EBS list
here we have to make a “research point” ; cannot say the one or the other right now
346. Infanterie-Division

Question: Was Grenadier-Regiment 1018 (formerly of the destroyed 70. Inf.Div.) later assigned to the 346. Inf.Div.? If so, then these two EBS holders perhaps should be counted with the 346. Inf.Div. and deleted from the 70. Inf.Div. (note a soldier of the destroyed Pi.Btl. 170 received his EBS on same date – perhaps more than a coincidence?). Thoughts on this matter would be appreciated!

Eberhardt, Theodor, 25.02.1945, Lt., 6./Gren.Rgt. 1018
Lotz, Georg, 25.02.1945, Lt., 8./Gren.Rgt. 1018
70. Inf.Div was at Insel Walcheren / Netherlands from 17.07.1944 – Nov 1944 where it came into Canadian captivity ; it’s Pionier-Bataillon 170 was not reformed later
346. Inf.Div was destroyed in august 1944 at Normandie ; reformed during autumn 1944 until Dec 1944 ; Gren.Rgt 1018 as a unit (number) was used (personal ?) [source: Tessin]

divisions up to #400 handled now.

RE : NKiG recipient Winkelmann added to 46. Inf.Div list on [page 34]

RE : NKiG recipient Konopacki added to ALA list on [page 20]

review / re-check

The following units are merged and reviewed. Please have a look for any further add&corr and typos if you have a moment of time. Some entries I noticed are marked red.

[page 8] 126. Inf.Div
[page 9] 72. Inf.Div
[page 10] 34. Inf.Div
[page 12] 73. Inf.Div
[page 15] 96. Inf.Div
[page 12] 25. and 27. Pz.Div
[page 44] 1. Pz.Div

I have noticed several recipients ranks : "d.B." (marked red)
Is it indeed fact that not a small number of recipients were Offiziere "des Beurlaubtenstandes" ?
Shawn, could you check a few to be sure that these are no typos.

We have to think about if the listing of the "Inf.Div / VGD" as a whole is working or if it would be better to have different lists for the (first) Inf.Divs and the (later) Volks-Grenadier-Divs.
Well, in my humble opiniom we should split them up as many VGDs had really much to do with the "original" ID/GD apart from the number. The point is the same as for the units that were reformed into Panzerdivisions: this reforming "produced" a whole new unit

Jan-Hendrik
Well, Yes ! Really better to split them up. No compromise to avoid work ! :x :)
As Shawn noticed for the Sicherungs units this issue for the ID - VGD divisions is not less complicated. As said, too, to have many "raw data" is not the badest start. It's on the agenda now.
