Excellent question! If it helps, the Luftwaffe officer is wearing the “Jagdgeschwader Frhr. V. Richthofen Nr. 1 1917/18” war commemorative cuff-title.

Regards,
Shawn

Hi!

Logically it should be Generalleutnant Alfred Gerstenberg, the Commanding General and Commander of German Luftwaffe in Rumania. He was also an Observer in the 2nd Combat-Wing ‘Richthofen’ in WWI.

VJK

Hi VJK,
I' m not yet convinced. Look at the glasses. The "War Commemorative cuff-title" was permitted to be worn by former members of the original World War I fighter squadrons of the "Jagdgeschwader (fighter, not bomber !!) Frhr. v. Richthofen Nr. 1".
Here is the only pic of Gerstenberg I have.
Cheers

Hi Oberstab!

I share your doubts, which is why I phrased the answer in the way I did. The glasses alone don't concern me too much, because here in the Forum we've seen so many instances where even well-recognisable Generals suddenly appear with glasses. Your pic of Gerstenberg is the only one I've seen as well, but as your pic doesn't show our mystery man face on, it is very difficult to identify him positively.

Regards,

VJK
