best regards kokstok.

Airship

#3

Post by Glenn2438 » 07 Mar 2004, 09:56

Hi kokstok,

it is the Airship Commemoration badge. Helmut Weidling was a former officer of the Prussian Luftschiffer-Bataillon Nr. 1

Glenn

Hi Glenn,
I also think this is the Erinnerungsabzeichen für Heeresluftschiffer, Steckabzeichen, 1920 – 1922, the Retired airship-crew badge (Imperial German Army). Here is a drawing.

Hi Oberstab,

This was identified as Dietl with Woytasch. No resemblance between the Berlin pic and the Dietl pic.

thanks

thanks everybody - on the second picture the person on the far right has (it seems) some other cross decoration under the iron cross -any idea what is it?
Hi Oberstab,

This was identified as Dietl with Woytasch. No resemblance between the Berlin pic and the Dietl pic.
The 1st pic (Berlin pic) doesn´t seem to show Woytasch. The guy has a 2nd pin back cross. Further pin back crosses from WWI include the Braunschweig 1, Oldenburg 1, Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1, Mecklenburg-Strelitz 1, Lippe Kreuz (1) für heldenmütige Tat, Wilhelm Ernst Kreuz and Reuß Pin back. I guess it´s the Braunschweig Cross 1st Class. Anyway Woytasch did not receive a 2nd pin back cross. Here are his awards:

· Prussian Royal Hohenzollern House Order, Knight’s Cross with Swords
· Prussia, Iron Cross 1st Class and 2nd Class
· Anhalt, Friedrich-Kreuz
· Lübeck, Hanseatic Cross
· Prussian Officers’ Long Service Cross
· Wound Badge in Silver

You see no pinbacks apart from the EK1 and a silver wound badge from WWI.

Regards!

In Anton Joachimsthaler book "The Last 100 Days of Hitler", the Berlin pic was identified as, from left to right, Weidling, Woytasch, Obst Theodor von Dufring and Schmid-Dankward. I think Oberstab was right about Wöhlermann. But given Woytasch commanded Inf Div 181 under Dietl in Trondheim, and there was some resemblance between the general second from left in the Berlin pic and the general next to Dietl, could the general to the extreme right in the Berlin pic be Schmid-Dankward instead?

Freiherr,

Very possible! Schmid-Dankward held the following WWI decorations:

• Prussian Iron Cross, 1st Class (1914)
• Prussian Iron Cross, 2nd Class (1914)
• Brunswick War Merit Cross, 1st Class
• Brunswick War Merit Cross, 2nd Class with “Bewährung” (Reliability) Clasp

The pin-back cross seen in the photo below the EKI certainly appears to be the Brunswick War Merit Cross, 1st Class.

Best regards,
Shawn

Hi!

Image

Considering the last three posts and considering that the guy far right (the short one) is wearing a Braunweig pin back cross I would hazard a guess that the pics is actually showing from left to right:

1. Gen. d. Art. Weidling (1st left)
2. Gen. Lt. Woytasch (2nd left; see Norway pic and wound badge)
3. an Oberst; Oberst Wöhlermann (3rd left, according to Oberstab)
4. Gen. Lt. Schmid-Dankward (4th left, see Braunschweig pin back cross)

Best!
Jürgen

Four Angry Men!

#13

Post by Edward L. Hsiao » 29 Oct 2005, 23:11

Gentlemen,

I'm pretty moved by that picture. These four high ranking men had gone though a lot during World War II especially during the Battle of Berlin. They looked tired, frustrated, and angry over the defeat of Germany and really fed up with Hitler. They also knew that they will be sent to the Soviet Union for long imprisonment. Sigh! :(

Sincerely,

Edward

Dieter,

Because of your incredible knowledge, I was able to spot Weidling's Erinnerungsabzeichen für Heeresluftschiffer and positively identify this as RK verleihung on 08.04.43.

Weilding was Kmdr of 86 Div
