Hi Fangio
Regarding the Kumm pic, I would say he is seen being awarded the OL since :
1- you seemingly can see what is looking like a RK to his neck,
2- Kumm is displayed here as a Staf. (he was awarded both RK and EL as an Ostubaf.)

Regards and many thanks to your contributions to this thread.

I have to say I completely agree with you what you have identified. But I would like to add that Mj Hajo Hermann was also listed as the 269th EL recipient that day, even though he wasn't in any of the pictures. God knows why Kirschner as an ObLt was standing where he was versus Weissenberger, at the end, the only other ObLt.
So:
Mj Helmut Lent not seen S#32
Mj Hajo Hermann not seen #269
Hptm Egmont Prinz zu Lippe Weissenfeld #263
Hptm Manfred Meurer #264
ObLt Joachim Kirschner #267
Hptm Heinrich Ehrler #265
Hptm Werner Schroer #268
ObLt Theodor Weissenberger #266

There is also another pic from the same day.

Cheers
Freiherr

Hi Freiherr,
When you say Hajo Herrmann was also listed in that day, are yoiu referring to his EL attribution number or to another information coming from an external source which includes him in that specific ceremony ?

Thanks in advance.
Denis

Sorry Denis,

Weather pretty nice here before humid summer really hits. Have been running in the morning and no time to reply!

I don't know how much credence you can give to the caption of the outdoor pic. It said 02.08.43. It was rare that the ceremony date was exactly the same as the award date for all of these EL-träger's. And if you looked up Hajo Hermann, he too was awarded the EL on this date. No idea why he was not seen.

Oberstab, I also agree with your identification regarding Lüth, Gysae, Topp, Suhren.

Cheers
Freiherr

Hi Denis and Mark V,

You might be interested to know that the two pics posted by you were from the same ceremony!!

The missing link is, surprise, surprise at http://www.islandfarm.fsnet.co.uk/Gener ... terlin.htm

Here you see
Gen von Senger und Etterlin (EL#439)
GenMj Hans Källner (EL#392)

Then .....I would think
Obst Heinrich Voigtsberger (EL#351)
Obst Maximilian Wengler (EL#404)

Then you come back to Obst Hermann Heinrich Behrend (EL#421)

Pretty cool :P :P :P

Cheers
Freiherr

Hello Freiherr
Nice and interesting finding. I would have never noticed it !
So here what we have :

April, May, 1944, location unknown
WH ceremony
From left to right :
- unidentified WH general receiving the Schwertern
- Gen. d. Pz.Tr. Hermann Breith (48. Schw.)
- Obslt. d.R. Franz Bäke (49. Schw.)
- Gen. d. Pz.Tr. Walther K. Nehring (383. EL)
- Gen. d. Pz.Tr. Fridolin von Senger und Etterlin (439. EL)
- Gen.Major Hans Källner (392. EL)
- unidentified Heer officer (Gen.Major or Oberst) receiving the Eichenlaub : Kossmala, Mummert, Hohn, LorenzKarl or Bronsart von Schellendorf. It can't be Heinrich Voigtsberger since this one is already listed in the "After 09/12/1943" ceremony (see at the end of the 6th page of this thread).
- Obst. Hermann-Heinrich Behrend (421. EL)
- Obstlt. Josef Bregenzer (427. EL)
- Obstlt. Meinrad von Lauchert (396. EL)
- Major Otto Benzin (406. EL)
- Hptm. Helmut Kalbitz (366. EL)
- Hptm. Josef Rettemeier (425. EL)
- Fw. Walter Möse (390. EL) (might also be Uffz. d.R. Josef Karl (397. EL))

The 7th officer is very difficult to identify.
Thanks again.

Dates

Post by Matt Gibbs » 06 Jul 2004 20:36

Gentlemen;
I don't know if anyone is inerested or aware but for late war award dates the microfilm records of the Volkischer beobachter are a sure fire way of getting dates, they are often on the front page of late 44 and 45 issues. I did some work on the 45 issues and found loads of high awards from RK KVK and RKs loads were mentioed also of th oakleaves etc etc. Usually the articles also tell the award 'number' as well, for example, I have a couple of photocopies to hand.
One article is headed Das Eichenlaub, from issue of 26th [or 28th hard to read!] March 1945 It states that in Berlin on 26 March the Fuhrer bestowed the Oakleaves to the Knjights Cross to Major Herbert wittmann as 735, Oberstleutnant iG Bernd von Baer [of Fallschirm Herm.Goering.] as 761 and Oberleutnant Kurt Welter [Of the Night fighters] as 769th recipient. So, regardless of when the date of grant was made the announcement of the ceremony was carried in the party newspaper and clearly states they recieved them on 26th March 1945.
It also mentions in the previous paragraph that on 18th March 1945 the Fuhrer gave the Oakleaves with Swords to General Walter Hartmann at Fuhrer HQ as the 139th soldier of the Wehrmacht to recieve them.
I may be able to do more searching as time allows on this. I will have to check some of my other copies.
For other Hitler bestowed awards on 21st February he bestowed the Knights Cross of the War Service Cross to:
Reichsbank Director Presidents
Dr Wilhelm Schell of Münster
Julius Metzger of Köln
Heinrich Zechmann of Villach
Reichsbahn Oberinspektors:
Ludwig Kirsch RK KVK mit Schw.
Ministrerial Director Dr Fritz Schelp of Berlin the RK KVK ohne Schw.

Also on 20th February 1945 the Fuhrer bestowed the Oakleaves on SS Sturmbannfuhrer Kurt wahl of SS PzGrenDiv Gotz von Berlichingen, the 720th recipient.
Sadly there are no photos in any of the articles I just thought perhaps some of you might like to know. Apologies for covering anything that has been mentioned before!
Regards
Matt Gibbs

Does anyone have a photo of Strachwitz or Brandi receiving their diamonds that they can post here? I have never seen one of these two men receiving this award.
