Re: Awards (OL, Sw. & Diam.) personally bestowed by Hitler
Hello bake!
There is a mistake in the date of Hossbach's ceremony. Hitler was on November 11th, 1943, not at the Wolfsschanze. Hossbach was awarded on September 11th, 1943. Hitler was from September 11th untill November, 7th, at the Wolfsschanze. Then on 8. and 9. November at Munich. From 10th till 15th November he was at his Berghof. After 16.11. untill end of the year he was at Wolfsschanze.
It's a mistake in Hitler's itinerar. So the ceremony must be before 8. November 1943 (my opinion) or after November 15th (I think too late!).

Cherkassy Pocket - Lieb-Degrelle-Gille
Hello,
Here is some information concerning the awards bestowed on several commanders following the breakout of the Cherkassy pocket (Korsun-Shevchenkovskii).
Following the breakout of the Cherkassy pocket (16-18. February 1944), SS-Gruppenführer Herbert-Otto Gille of SS-Wiking Division, SS-Hauptstürmführer Léon Degrelle of SS-Brigade Wallonien and Generalleutnant Theobald Lieb (m.d.F.b.) of XXXXII AK flew to Rastenburg aboard a Ju-52 on the evening of 20. February 1944. Upon arrival, the SS officers were transported by limousine to their quarters. Lieb seems to have reached the Wolfsschanze by other means. This may explain why Theobald Lieb received his Eichenlaub (400) in a separate ceremony. Gille and Degrelle were together when Hitler bestowed the Schwertern (47) to the former and the Ritterkreuz to the latter.
Many notes on this website mention the awards ceremony was on 18. February. Also note that the “official” date for Lieb’s award is 18. February while Gille and Degrelle’s date for their respective awards is 20. February. The ceremony actually took place on 20. February 1944.
Picture No.1 (Lieb and Hitler) can be found at the BPK site.

Picture No.2 (Degrelle-Gille-Fegelein-Hitler) is taken from the following AHF page.

Go to the following AHF page for more photos of Hitler with Degrelle and Gille.

Note how Hitler is warm to Degrelle in the photos. Upon meeting Degrelle, Hitler would have mentioned “I’ve been very worried about you”. Degrelle apparently received the Eichenlaub on 25. August 1944 (not confirmed – I find no sources to this effect). Upon receiving his Oakleaves, Hitler would have told him, "Si j'avais eu un fils, j'aurais aimé qu'il fût comme vous" - "If I had a son, I would want him to be like you." (Interview given by Léon Degrelle to Jean Kapel in Histoire magazine; No. 19, septembre 1981). This statement is contested by Degrelle’s biographer, Jean-Marie Frérotte in Léon Degrelle, le dernier fasciste (Bruxelles, Paul Legrain, 1987). After the ceremony Degrelle would have said of Hitler, “I saw in his eyes that he looked at me like a son”.
Although taken 6 months earlier, the photos of the Cherkassy ceremony show a warmth that Hitler rarely demonstrates to other soldiers.
A short video of the three officers in audience with the Führer is found at the following:
http://www.gutenberg-e.org/esk01/video/ ... id241.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOcrOqJgF50
In these videos, we can clearly see that Lieb’s ceremony was independent from the SS officers. The ceremony was in the same room though, as one can see from the map in the background on the wall.
Following the ceremony, a press conference was held in which the three officers made statement which were broadcast live throughout Germany. Dr. Otto Dietrich, an SS-Obergruppenführer and the Reichspressechef (Reichs Press Chief) was present for this conference.
Dieter Zinke posted a good picture of the press conference at the following page.

Picture No. 3 (following the ceremony) can be found at the following website.

I hope this information may be useful to you !
Am looking for info on Degrelle’s Eichenlaub award. What recipient number did he have if he did receive the award ? I have SS-Untersturmführer Bruno Hinz (559) on 23. August 1944 and Obst. Helmuth Mäder (560) on 27. August 1944. The das-ritterkreuz.de website has no metion of Degrelle receiving the Oakleaves to the Knight’s Cross.
Merci beaucoup !

Concerning Degrelle's Eichenlaub :
"EL o.Nr." means "without number". Foreigners higher awards were issued without a "number".
