Freiherr Varnbüler von und zu Hemmingen (Ulrich)
note correct spelling of the last name (Source: Rangliste des Deutschen Reichsheeres, 1932)

Yes, I know that he was at least Brig. Gen. in the (GE) Bundeswehr, maybe higher.

Here is what Mehner tells us:
Ia 262. Infanteriedivision: 05.1940-07.1943
Ia 2. Panzerarmee: 10.07.1943-25.10.1944
Ch. d. St. 4. Armee: 05.04.1945-27.04.1945
Ch. d. St. 21. Armee (ex 4. Armee): 27.04.1945-08.05.1945

No mention that he was Chief of Staff Heeresgruppe Mitte 1945 though. This position was filled by Gen. Lt. Heidkämper and later by Gen. Lt. von Natzmer.

Awards:
Deutsches Kreuz in Gold (Date ?)

Sorry, that´s all. I hope somebody else can fill in the remaining gaps.

Sorry for replying that late, but I am not sure if I understand correctly. Mehner, without being included in the index :x, gives:

Heeresgruppe Nord
Chef:
25.1.45-2.4.45, Varnbühler [sic!] v. u. z. Hemmingen, von [sic!]

Heeresgruppe Mitte
Chef:
25.1.45-15.2.45, Xylander, Wolfdietrich Ritter von
17.2.45-8.5.45, Natzmer, Oldwig von

Alex,

would you mind sharing your knowledge when exactly in 1940 Varnbüler became Ia 262. Division and replaced Haidlen? I would love to know it.
