Luftwaffe funeral

#1

Post by lohengrin » 22 Sep 2004, 01:08

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine got me these 3 pictures (the 4th. was sold to someone else) of Luftwaffe funeral on eBay some time ago. They are pretty amazing. On them are Fozo, Gollob and Mayer attending some funeral... Any idea whose? Where does it take place (you can see a piece of some cathedral on one of the photos)?

Also there are several other Luftwaffe officers... Any guesses who they are?

Finally, what is the connection? All of these men were flying in different squadrons... would that mean that this funeral is for someone important?

Best Regards from Norway.

Hello

This is very difficult to say. However, we can give a date for this photo :
Since Egon Mayer is shown wearing his Oakleaves, the photo was taken between 16/04/43 (Mayer's EL) and 02/03/44 (Mayer's death). Viewing how soldiers are dressed, that trees haven't got any leaves, I would say this photo was taken during autumn 43 or winter 1943-44.
Can you tell us what is the rank of Mayer ? This might help us.
Is there any connection between Fözö, Gollob and Mayer (same unit at a time) ? I know that Fözö was assigned to Schule J.G. 108. Would it be funeral for a pupil of a teacher of this school ?
Hope this helps
Denis

Hmmm... Man wearing a coat with furcollars, do I see mustaches? I´m tempted to say a certain well-known name but... I´m not gonna do that :D

Time of the year when picture was taken? Perhaps late autumn or early spring. If it was late autumn, it could Hans Philipp´s funeral - KIA Nordhorn, Oct. 08, 1943.

Just a suggestion.

I might be wrong, but it looks to me that there is more than one coffin.

Hello
As Mayer is seen on one of the photo satanding alone in front of the coffins, the deceased soldiers might belong to the J.G. 2
Just a guess

Good day everybody. Going with Denis' suggestion about the deceased men being part of JG 2, and with the time period of autumn 1943/winter 1943-44, and considering the funeral must be for distinguished officers (hence the brass band, etc), could the funeral be for Siegfried Schnell or Heinz Schumann? Both were part of JG 2. Schnell was KIA on 25.02.1944 in the Soviet Union. He had the Ritterkreuz and Oak Leaves, and I believe he died ranked as a Major after acheiving 93 kills in the air. On the other hand, Schumann was KIFA on 08.11.1943 in Bastogne, Belguim after acheiving 21 kills in the air. He was ranked Hauptmann, and had received the Ritterkreuz. Just an idea or two. Hope that helps! Take care, Paul.

Bonjour,
It is my first connexion to this great forum.Sorry for my English (i am french)
I am so happy to see these photos. I do some research about the JG2 Richthofen in Normandy and these photos are very interesting.
These photos have been taken near Beaumont le Roger, in Parc Parissot where the JG2 Richthofen made ceremony when they lost a member.
I know other photos taken in Parc Parissot. I don't think these photos concerned only one pilot. I think we can see 3 coffin...
