German Generals 1920-1924

Post by Robert Brockmeier » 10 Oct 2004 06:08

Does anyone know who the following GenLts were: RDAs 16.06.20(1) and (3); 1.10.20(2) von Dassel or Kabisch?; and 1.10.21 (1-4). Also GenMaj. 16.06.20(2) Heye or Grautoff?; 1.12.20(1); 1.04.21(1); and 1.01.23(1)?
I have the Biblio Verlag Generals des Heeres books(7 to date), but some of the Entries lack the sub number. Also, who determined what sub number a General was assigned if there is a promotion date? Thanks.

Robert,

according to the 1923 edition of the Rangliste, Generalleutnant von Dassel had seniority of 1.10.20 (1)

In the 1924 edition Generalleutnant von Poseck is 1.10.20 (2), von Loßberg 1.10.20 (3) and von Horn 1.10.20 (4)

The only Generalleutnant listed for 1.10.21 in 1923 is von Klotz.

Unfortunately I don't have my 1922 list here with me in Germany so could only consult as far back as 1923 when some of the officers were already promoted or retired.

Regards
Glenn

Also, who determined what sub number a General was assigned if there is a promotion date? Thanks.
I don´t know if I understand right but I try: The sequence numbers were usually given by considering the former rank lists, ie if 3 persons were promoted to Gen. Maj. they got (1) (2) and (3) according to their last position in the rank lists. Of course there were situations when persons listed behind were preferred promoted (although I don´t recall any situation right now). A special situation was in the pre war Wehrmacht. The Cdrs. of Heeresgruppen and the Armeekorps were Generals. But the Heeresgruppen-Cdrs. obviously got backdated promotion dates to "overtake" the most senior Army Corps Cdr in their area. I hope that this is of some help.

by the way ... talking with both specialists ... does anybody of you happen to know the General promotion date of Seeckt?

Thank you Glen 2438 and Stauffenberg II for your prompt replies. The GenLt list was basically what I suspected. However, Otto Haas is listed as GLT 1.12.20 with Rda 1.10.20. So I don't know where to put him in the list. I will have to familiarize myself more with the promotion procedures used back then.
As for von Seeckt, I have the following: Gen 1.10.20(1), Gen Lt 16.06.20, no Rda and possibly the wrong date; GM 26.06.15B, Oberst 27.01.15?, OberstLt 4.04.13. Hope these are correct. The dates coincide with my WW1 list as von Eisenhart Rothe was the last GenLt with an Rda of 18.10.18A and GM of 15.02.15B, so von Seeckt's promotion in 1920 to GenLt would seem appropriate. At least that's what I have been able to find.

Hi Robert!

I have just received a much appreciated courtesy from Glenn, a xeroxed copy of the 1922 Dienstaltersliste (many thanks Glenn!).

I have processed it at once (using Fraktur letters) and maybe you can use the info. It is a great snapshot of the early Reichsheer:
