I have found 2 different asignments for this man. And they both come from reliable sources. The question is where he was when he got his ritterkreuz 18.01.1941

1. das-ritterkreuz.de:
Kommandant Schwerer Kreuzer "Lützow"

2. "Chronik des seekrieges" by J.Rohwehr:
in the staff of "Admiral der norwegischen Nordküste" 06.40 - 06.41

I`m suspecting that there could be 2 men with this name, and only "No1."
actually got the RK, but can anyone confirm this??

I don't think Source No. 1 is correct as to assignment when the Knight's Cross was awarded -- The heavy cruiser "Lutzow" was sold, in an unfinished condition, to the USSR on 11 Feb 1940, according to Jason Pipes and Arvo Vercamer's website Feldgrau -- http://www.feldgrau.com/lutzow.html

Source No. 2 is correct, according to Thiele's bio on Michael Miller's ABR site: http://www.geocities.com/~orion47/WEHRM ... miral.html

You are right that "Lützow" was sold to the Russians (and later sunk by Rudel)
But in when ww2 started, the Panzerschiffe Deutchland was re-commissioned as Schwere kreuzer Lützow.
It was badly damaged during Weserübung. The repairs were finished in August 1940 and this web-page,
http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quart ... schl1.html
is missing the commander between 07-40 and 03-41.
I suspect that Thiele should be there....

Only that http://www.das-ritterkreuz.de has a wrong asignment for him

Admiral der norwegischen Nordküste: 27 Apr 1940 - 19 Jun 1941.
Schwerer Kreuzer Lützow", Kommandant: 30 Nov 1939 - 18 Apr 1940

Erik :

Slightly off-topic but do you know if the Nachtjagdleitschiff "Togo" sailed through your "home" waters ? I do know that it was active in Finland in 43.

E very curious

As far as I know, the "NJL Togo" never visited Norway......
Before it went to Finland, it was used outside Denmark as "Early warning" for German cities. In 1946 (after being in USA for a year) it was sold to the Norwegian navy and used as troopcarrier.

This is indeed a very interesting ship! Have you seen the photos of it?

Yes, and actually there is going to be some text in our book about it. We are in touch with the II WO's son and whom wrote a book on the ship and it's later life......Kurt Petsch. There are around 25 vets still alive from this grand and most unusual craft. A very much overlooked part of the Kriegsmarine/Luftwaffe activites.

got to run now, back tomorrow....

bis bald,

Erik :

By chance would you have access to a weapons plan of the TOGO ? Petsch's book has several hand drawn armament plans but they are very hard to dicpher. Something of interest on this ship. This thing was parked in the Bay of Danzig for most of 45 before sailing out with refugees in april of 45. As it was parked it was the general radar installation, though mobil, that predicted Soviet a/c involvment on a daily basis. Why this ship was not targeted by the soviets either during the day or night has always puzzled me, since it was of major importance.
