Oberst Arnold Altvater-Mackensen (1883-1945)

My grandfather mentions an "Oberst Altvater-Mackensen", who commanded the 429. Infanterie-Regiment (168. ID) from September 1940 until July 1941.
Does anybody has informations about his biography, awards, assignments, picture etc.?
Is he a "real" Heeres-Oberst or is he an Oberführer of the Waffen-SS (I´ve read something like that)?
EVERY information is appreciated!!!

Hello! There is a Major Altvater-Mackensen listed in the Rangliste des Deutschen Reichsheeres dated 1 May 1930. Unfortunately, the Ranglisten do not give first names nor can I say for certain if this is the same officer. As of this date, Major Altvater-Mackensen was on the staff of the 15.Infanterie-Regiment based in Kassel. He was a recipient of both classes of the WWI Iron Cross, the Schaumburg-Lippe Cross for Faithful Service and the Turkish War Medal (“Iron Crescent”). His date of rank to Major was 1 January 1928 (1).

Best regards,
Shawn

I found some information about the 168.ID on the Internet.
Maybe you can check out this information.
It seems that the 429.IR was under the control of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler for a time. But I guess Altvater-Mackensen was just a Oberst in the Wehrmacht.

Hi!

An officer by the name of Arnold Altvater-Mackensen (born 8 June 1883) commanded Infanterie-Regiment 22 between 1 October 1934 - 1 December 1935, presumably with the rank of Oberst.

Happy New Year!

Phil,

Excellent photo and bio sketch! Per the Rangliste des Deutschen Reichsheeres dated 1 May 1926, his DOR to Hauptmann was 25 February 1915 (7). In this edition, he was chief of the 11th Company of the 18. Infanterie-Regiment.

Best regards,
Shawn
