Does anyone know when and where Maj Gen Carl-Hans Lungershausen, the commander of the 164th Light Afrika and 90th Panzer Grenadier Divisions, died? Also, a photograph of him would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Sandy Mitcham

Hi,

does anybody have a bio of him covering 1940-1941.

The reason I am asking is that in all sources Lungershausen as Adj. Heeresgruppe B is streched until JUN, 1941. However I have found several documents of JAN and MAR, 1941 in which Oberst v. Below was already signing as Adj.

So I would be very much interested in the period DEC, 1940 - JUN, 1941.

Thanks
Jürgen

The actual commands of Lungershausen in Africa are not quite clear. The KTB of 90. leDiv says nothing about the alleged mFb listed on the Karteikarte (15 July to 10 August 1942). The KTB of 164. leDiv is apparently lost for the period before 01.11.1942, and I do not know the later KTB. The KTB of DAK mentions that Lungershausen took over 164. leDiv on 18.09.1942 (although an earlier stint could be possible). A Beurteilung by Rommel from February 1943 says: "Bei Autounfall fiel er durch Gehirnerschütterung frühzeitig aus", but not when this happened. In any case, Westphal and / or Liebenstein were mstFb 164. leDiv around the turn of the year 1942/43. If anybody owns NARA T-315 R-1474, please help. Additional photos of Lungershausen would also be welcome.

The appointments list that shows his tasking to 164. le. Div. states
mWv 10.08.1942 Oberst Lungerhausen z.V. Pz.Armee Afrika m.d.F.b. 164. le. Div.

So it looks like he was tasked with leading 90. le. Div. but by the time he arrived in Africa this didn't happen and he was z.V. Pz.Armee until he took over 164. le. Div.

He left 164. le. Div. temporarily between 31.08.1942 and 18.09.1942 to lead 21. Pz.Div. following the death of von Bismarck. The entry in the KTB for 18.09.1942 states:
"11.00 Uhr trifft Generalmajor von Randow bei der Div ein und übernimmt die Führung.
Oberst Lungershausen übernimmt wieder Führung der 164. ID."

Zounds! THAT was it! I knew I overlooked something. Of course, my notes show his stint at 21. PzDiv, but I didn't check that division because the Karteikarte did not mention it. Thanks for the reminder, John. I think Hecker commanded 164. le.Div. while Lungershausen was away, but not for the whole period. Regarding 10 August, I think it is clear that Lungershausen was intended to command the division in Africa, but the question is when the division (or the significant parts of it) really arrived in Africa. It may have been some days later.

Generalleutnant Karl-Hans Lungershausen (1896-1975)

Thanks to user Rudolf44, I now have the KTB of 164. leDiv. Lungershausen's car accident occurred "in der Nacht vom 14. zum 15. November", but he (formally) retained command for another three weeks. The KTB shows that many duties outside of the command post were fulfilled by the Ia, Oberst Markert. So we know:

10.08.1942 – 31.08.1942 Oberst Karl-Hans Lungershausen (mFb)
01.09.1942 – 18.09.1942 Oberst Hans Hecker (mstFb)
18.09.1942 – 08.12.1942 Oberst (01.10.1942 Generalmajor) Karl-Hans Lungershausen
08.12.1942 – 28.12.1942 Oberst Siegfried Westphal (mstFb)
28.12.1942 – 16.01.1943 Oberst Kurt Freiherr von Liebenstein (mFb)
16.01.1943 – 18.02.1943 Oberst Rudolf Becker (mstFb)
18.02.1943 – 13.03.1943 Generalmajor Fritz Krause (mstFb)
13.03.1943 – 13.05.1943 Generalmajor Kurt Freiherr von Liebenstein

Parts of the division arrived in Africa during July 1942, but I found no original data on any commander before Hecker (including Lungershausen, who should have been there in August). Formally, Folttmann remained commander until 10.08.1942, but he obviously never left Crete for Africa.
