Leutnant Gero von Lewinski, genannt von Manstein (1922-1942)

Gero with his father,Born 31st Dec 1922
Was described by his father as delicate from birth as an asthma sufferer but determined to get over his difficulty to be a soldier 1940-took final School exam at the Ritter Academy Liegnitz, joined the Infantry so he joined the 51st Pz Gdr Regt 18th Inf Div - later motorized 1941 - was a Private in Russian campaign, same year a Corporal awarded IC II Class, autumn 1941 went to Officer School and Spring of 1942 promoted Leutnant.
After a serious illness, returned to his unit in the Lake Ilmen, where he was killed, and buried there at the age of 20 as a member of the 18th Pz Gdr Div. Photo I believe taken in Russia shortly before death

Hallo harmel,

the pic was taken in the headquarter of GFM Busch, CiC AOK 16, in Pleskau in October 1942. Gero was KIA 29.10.1942

I forgot to specify who's position! I meant the father's position...

Any other pic of this son? By the way he was quite old when he got him! (and as far as I remember it, von Rundstedt and Raeder were also old when they got their owns).

Hello,

I'm a bit confused about the position of von Manstein at this date.

If I get it right, von Manstein, as CinC 11th Army was visiting GenOb Busch at the time of this pic and was then subordonated to GFM von Küschler CinC HGr "Nord" ?

I wasn't aware that von Manstein - as a Fieldmarschall - worked within HGr "Nord" along with its army...

Who could give me some more dates about his presence in this area ? I've always thought that HGr "Don" was set up from the staff of the 11. Armee, implying that this army stayed in the south under his command...

Amazing to discover some unknown major facts about the Wehrmacht's order of battle !

Willab,

Hq 11 Armee with XXX A.K. and Hq LIV A.K. began arriving HG Nord area (Leningrad) on August 27, 1942. It was upgraded to HG Don and transfered south in late November '42.
