Post by kstdk » 10 Nov 2005, 01:20

Hello all
I am looking for ANY additional informations about Korvettenkapitän Hans Bartels.
It is for a follow up on an article that we have had in a Danish Newspaper this last sunday regarding the sinking of 4 danish fishingvessels in feb. 1940 ( yes, 2 month before the invasion of Denmark ) where 17 men died.
Bartels was the commander of the M 1 which sunk these boats, all fishingboats from Esbjerg.
I am curious to know some details about this man !!!
I have made a Google search, and a search on this forum as well and found some interesting info.
But some is still missing, so.....anybody able to help with some "massive" info on this man.

Bartels:
Born: 05.07.1910 in Frankfurt / Main
Died: 31.07.1945 in Rendsburg in a accident
Anybody know about that accident ????

Service:
05.03.39 - 26.05.40 Kapitänleutnant, Kommandant M 1
27.05.40 - 06.12.42 Küstensicherungsverbande beim Admiral Norwegische Westküste: 51. - 53. - 55. Vorpostenflotille
07.12.42 - 11.08.43 I. Offizier Z 24
12.08.43 - ??.08.44 Kommandant T 14
??.08.44 - 08.05.45 Kleinkampfverbände ( Lehrkdo. 250 / Chef Biberflotillen 261-262-263-264-265-266-267-268-269-270 )

Anybody know some additional info on his servicecareer in the above mentioned units ??
Any info on Z 24 and T 14 ??
I am also most interested in his time with the Kleinkampfverband in France, Belgien and Holland. !!!
Hans Bartels has published a book: "Tigerflagge heiss vor" - Ritterkreuzträger Kapitänleutnant Hans Bartels erzählt.
Deutsher Heimatverlag / Bielefeld, Gieseking 1943.
Anybody know this book ?? - Or any other available sources ?

Hello Kstdk!
I have read Bartels' book some years ago. It's about his operations during the nowegian campaign, when he gets the Knightscross. You can find some books at zvab.com, for example.
The book was edited in 1941 at first time.
Have you looked at "das-ritterkreuz.de"?

Hi Kstdk,

They do have a copy of the book at the Kongelige Bibliotek as the only library in Denmark. However it is located in the Danish Collection (Danske samling) from where you not normaly allowed to loan it. You can of course see it at the library.

Now since it is not a Danish title it is possible that you could get it through a inter-library loan to your local library and use it in the reference room. If you are located in Copenhagen then it is of course easier to go to the Kongelige Bibliotek.

This would allow you to check the book before buying it.

Kind Regards

Hello
To follow up on this - we are still working with this case. I found a picture of Hans Bartels (source mentioned in the picture).
I shows ( I think) the day that he got the Ritterkreuz. He is accompanied by General Falkenhorst and Admiral von Schrader from his ship M 1 to the ceremony where he got his Ritterkreuz. That would date the picture to 16. maj 1940.
Still - any new / other information about Hans Bartels are most welcome, specially about his career after M 1 and in the time late in the war are most interesting - but very little information are to be found.
Regards

Hello Kurt!
I found some information about Hans Bartels in Helmut Blocksdorf's "Das Kommando der Kleinkampfverbände der Kriegsmarine" (2003)...
Bartels took command of Schwerpunktraum Niederrhein on March 11, 1945, with the Tarnbezeichnung "Lederstrumpf". This command included Kampfschwimmer and was reinforced with the K-Flottille 218.
On April 20, 1945, two Kampfgruppen (with Kampfschwimmer) from the Sonderverband "Lederstrumpf" was relocated to the Magdeburg area, and equopped with Treibminen and "Spezialsprenggeräten" for blowing up the bridges over the Elbe at Barby. (No more information is known about this)

Hello Krollspell
Thank you very much for that information - that was indeed new to me :) It is not easy to find anything regarding the Kleinkampfmittel at the end of the war, and I still have not found out what really happened in the accident in which Bartels died in Rendsburg. I suppose though, that it was a explosion during mine clearing as prisoner of war with the British - but what really happened??? Again thanks for the additional info on Bartels. Anyone for more??
