Commanders 1. Gebirgs-Division

#1

Post by yantaylor » 14 Aug 2017, 13:54

Hi everyone.
I have been searching for data on the 1. Gebirgs Division and it was pointed out to me that I had made an error with the divisions commanders.
I had General Robert Martinek as the commander from 1st January 1942 to 1st December 1942. He was replaced by General Lanz.
He was also in the 7th 1. Gebirgs-Division.
So has anyone got a complete list of the officers of the 1. Gebirgs-Division?
I don't want to just view Wiki or something and get wrong data, and I must you guys are pretty good.

One question I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to, is this; Were all the commanding officers of the Fallschirmjäger divisions, all Luftwaffe personnel?

Regards
Yan.

Thanks Krollspell, The site does not even mention Robert Martinek as commander, I wonder if he was acting.
Here is what I had on my hard drive;

General der Gebirgstruppen Ludwig Kübler 1st September 1939 to 25th October 1940
General der Gebirgstruppen Hubert Lanz 25th October 1940 to 1st January 1942
General der Artillerie Robert Martinek 1st January to 1st December 1942
Generalleutnant Walter Stettner Ritter von Grabenhofen 1st December 1942 to 10th October 1944
Generalleutnant Josef Kübler 10th October 1944 to 10th March 1945
Generalleutnant August Wittmann 10th March to 12th March 1945

Hi,

Do you know the reason that

is not mentioned in the chronic of 1. Geb.-Div. written by R. Kaltenegger?

From where do you have the info about R. Martinek?

Thanks in advance for your source.

Lanz commanded 1 Gebirgs-Division throughout 1942, as outlined in his biography "Hubert Lanz - General der Gebirgstruppe 1896 - 1982" by Charles B. Burdick.

His effective date (mit Wirkung vom) for transfer into the FR was 17.12.1942 which was the effective date from which Stettner was tasked with leading the division (mdFb).

No idea where the idea that Martinek commanded could possibly have come from, it must simply be a typing error, - because his correct appointment as Kdr 7 Gebirgs-Division is also shown in axishistory.

Regards

John

Why was division given the "Volks" heading in 1945?
Thanks,

Hello,

Why do you think he is from the 1.Geb.Div. The Edelweiss was the standard insignia of all mountain troops so he could be from any mountain formation.

Are those captured soldiers French?
Are they prisoners?
Is this actually Bordeaux?

Hello,
The picture has been taken in Bordeaux on July 40. the place is exactly "Caserne Niel". This photo is part of a complete album. There is no doubt for the location.
One of my friend, very keen on Geb Div told me that was the first division who came in southwest france. But no more informations !

Best regards

According to a promotion/command change list from HPA (24 Feb 1945), 1. Gebirgs-Division was renamed 1. Volks-Gebirgs-Division.
