SS-Leibstandarte StuG battery markings

#1

Post by phillip burke » 16 Sep 2017, 20:20

Hello all, just looking at pictures of the early StuGs and i noticed that some had bullseye marking with a dot in the middle and some StuGs and 250 had bullseye without the dot in the middle, so the question is ,was this the way they marked the platoons in the early StuG battery or was there some over way to tell difference between them.

Looking closely at pictures of StuGs from the Leibstandarte battery, pictured in Leibstandarte Archives , it appears as though two StuGs have a solid dot, two have bullsye with dot in middle, and final two have just a bullseye with no dot in middle. It seems that the supporting 250,253 also have the same markings, anyone have any thoughts on this.

Hi,

Interesting observation. The unit was pretty small early on - only six StuG III - so I always assumed that they simply numbered them 1 to 6, as one can see on photos of the rear of these vehicles in Balkans and Russia 1941. This wasn't the case when the unit was first formed and trained at Metz, as there are no numbers on the rear at this point.

The circle might have been some sort of squad ID as you say. One vehicle has a small number '2' inside the circle as well, and yet another seems to have this 'circle and dot' marking in black rather than white.

Very interesting.

Hello stoveb, thanks for the reply and the info. does anyone out there know how many ,when and where the early Stug A,BC and D were issued to the Leibstandarte, the info required being up to the 42/43 conversion into a panzergrenadier division.

Hello all, in Soldiers of the Leibstandarte there s a couple of pictures of a Stug marked up for the leaving of Max Wunsche from the Stug battery. The photos are dated May 1942 and the place is Rostov, it seems this day was bit of a celebration and loads of photos taken, can anyone post other pictures from this event ,personal recollections etc, any help most appreciated as usual.

Hi PB . As you're probably aware, Wünsche was the temporary CO at that time and was leaving to go to the 6.Generalstanslehrgang. it wasn't thought he would return after as he should have progressed along the Stabs route but he did in September to take permanent command (albeit only for 6 weeks). Heinz v Westernhagen took over command in October 42, do you or anyone know who was the new CO when MW was attending the course?

I just thought to look for myself on this one and found the answer - Although its not in his Dienslaufbahn, von Westernhagen has a document in his file which confirms he took over on the 20th of May 42.

Just a note on the location of these Wünsche photos, it can't be Rostov on Don as that was still in Soviet hands until July 1942. The LAH was based around Stalino at this time, so probably around there.

Does anybody knows the SS PzKorps has any support by SS-StuG. battery at winter 1943 if yes how many it had? Or the LAH had new KStN with StuG.Abt. 35 StuG?
Look for it and you will find it...

I have found that LAH had new KStN for Stug.Abt., the each battery had 11 Stug's. The Abteilung had in posession 13 Stug's AusF F and 9 Stug's AusF G plus 13 Stug's with 7.5 cm. Kw.K. 37 L/24.

It's clear to me now why the PzK reported about of 18 Stug's losses during February-March 1943.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing.

I have the unit structure for 03.12.1942 which shows the Stug Abt has the KStN 446 from 01.11.1941, with a total of 7 Stugs per Batterie.

The structure for 01.04.1943 has 10 Stugs for the first two Batterien and none in the 3rd. Do you know which KStN they adopted and when?
It is possible they could have 10 Stugs per Batterie and still be the KStN 446.

Cheers

I know it too. This structure has been taken from T175R108. This Roll shows the theoretical organization which has been produced by SS-FHA. I use other Kriegsgliederung of LAH from Anlage A 159 (SS-PzK). You can see that GD received the same StugAb. organization chart later in January 1943.
The next munition which was ordered for StugAbt 31/12/42 after receiving of the order about the transferring to the East:
35 Warmwasserübertragungsgerät Stu. Gesch. Nr. 7c/4s
35 Kampfraumbeheizung
35 Kühlwasserheizgerät
35 Satz Wintergleisketten
35 Stück Anwärmer
