An Ersatzheer question

Postby CNE503 » 08 Jun 2018 09:48

Hello,
I read opposite things about the creation of the Ersatzheer. Some sources state that it occurred when the mobilization process began (Mobilmachung, August 26th, 1939), other ones that it was created in 1938.
Who's right?
Is there any primary source that could be used as an evidence (for instance a decree, a law)?
Thank you.
Regards,

HI CNE503,
As there was no Feldheer until it had left its barracks (to the Ersatzheer) on the outbreak of war, logic would suggest that the formal separation occurred on mobilization. As Germany deployed a Feldheer at the time of the Munich Crisis in 1938, I see no reason, in principle, why there could not have been more than one establishment of an Ersatzheer in 1938-39.
Or, to put it another way, I don't actually know!
Cheers,
Sid.

Hi Sid,
Thank you for your answer!
Yeah, this one is tricky, but it should exist a document or something that gives a formal date to the existence of the Ersatzheer.
If I rely only on Fromm's biographies like this one (http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Per ... edrich.htm), it was only when the order of mobilization was issued on August 26th, 1939. Cheers,

Hi CNE503,
There is a full length biography on Fromm published in German (Der starke Mann im Heimatkriegsgebiet by Kroener) which might well answer your question. Cheers,
Sid.

Sid,
Thank you for this reference. Is there any chance that a forum member has access to this book? (message in a bottle)
Cheers,
CNE503
