Panzerjägerabt. 1 during the second Ladoga battle
Panzerjägerabt. 1 during the second Ladoga battle
Does anyone know about a place called Emga, Strella (or something like that) south of Ladoga. The Panzerjägerabteilung of the 1. Infanterie Division fought there in the winter of 1943 (2nd Ladoga battle 11.1. - 5.4.43). I would like to have the name confirmed or corrected.
Best regards/ Daniel

Daniel,
I believe you are looking for the town of MGA which is 46km south-east of the center of Leningrad [St.Petersburg].
There was a great amount of fighting in and around this area since it was close to the most eastern extent of HG Nord and was a front line most of their time in the area.
best regards,

I have here a detailed map of the "Leningradski Krai".
Schmitz/Thiess tells that the 1. ID (mot.) fought sputh of Ladoga-Sea, south of Gaitolovo.
Tessin said - south of Ladoga-Sea, Pogostje pocket, south of Kolpino (18. Armee)
south of Gailovo are the cities/villages:
Apraksin, Micailovskii, Slawjanka, Nasija, Poretschie
southeast:
Sologubovka, Pucholovo

Daniel,
Are you talking about the German word stelle meaning a place, a point, a spot or a position. In German it would be possible to see "stellen am MGA" meaning positions in MGA. A stellung is a military position. Just a possibility.
MGA is the way the Germans write it and on current maps it appears as MGA
Here is some info from the web site on train schedules from St. Petersburg. You can see Mga called out.

Some Thoughts
Daniel,
I just received a book on the 11. ID which was fighting in the same battles as the I. ID and in checking through the maps and text I can find nothing that resembles Strella. What I do find is that Mga was a critical point in the defense of the German line and the Soviets were attempting to bust through from the area to the east from Wolchow in early 1943. I believe the information you have is talking about the defensive position in and around Mga since it was a significant location. The area between Mga and Schüsselburg on the coast of the Ladoga See was fought for intensely by both sides. and the Germans had several defensive lines in the area. The germand managed to keep the heights at Ssinjawino.
That about all I could put together.
Ron

This is an old thread but in case it's of use, this map shows the position of 1.ID on January 13, 1943. Unfortunately most of the placenames are difficult to read.
