KStN for HQ vehicles

#1

Post by yantaylor » 30 Jun 2020, 11:14

Hi everyone.

I have been searching through wwiidaybyday site looking for the KStN which covers the battalion HQ of Panzer Aufklärungsabteilung circa 1940/43. Unless my eyes have failed me, I cannot find this unit among huge list located on that excellent site.

The reason I ask this, is that I have built models of various armoured cars and other light vehicles and want to know were they fit in in regards to the recce battalion. The vehicles I need to locate a home for are; s.E.Pkw (Kfz-69), Sd. Kfz 260 or 261 and Sd. Kfz 263.

Thank you all.

Sd. Kfz 260 or 261 and Sd. Kfz 263 were commonly in the Nachrichtenzug which was part of the Stab/Stabskompanie. For example, in June 1941 the Aufkl.Abt. LAH had its Nachrichtenzug expanded and its vehicles were replaced by armoured cars following KstN 1191: two Sd.Kfz. 263 eight-wheeled armoured radio vehicles, four Sd.Kfz. 261 four-wheeled armoured radio vehicles, one Sd.Kfz. 260 four-wheeled armoured radio vehicle and two motorcycle-combinations for the dispatch riders. They were only a platoon when at rest - only with the Stab in name, they depended on the Panzerspähkompanie for its provisions and maintenance. In action they were organised to operate as single radio teams with the companies of the Aufklärungsabteilung. Other vehicles from the platoon were called upon to join scouting missions – which was usually a last-minute decision.

Ian, it will be KStN 1109 . Do you not have the link to Christoph's site ?

http://www.wwiidaybyday.com/kstn/kstnpanzermain.htm

The Kfz 69 was a towing vehicle for the 3,7cm Pak so is a bit confusing given the question.

Whoops, maybe that’s why I could find the relevant KStN, I should have been looking for Nachrichtenzug. I should have known that!
Great stuff guys, that has helped me out a lot.
I suppose that this KStN is the one that DAK used in Africa.

I can see two KStN which fit the bill, 1109 and 1109 (gp), the 1109 seems to be for motorcycle units and the 1109 (gp) dates from 1943.
There is also a KStN 1191, which dates from 1938, so which one would the 3rd and 33rd Recce battalions have in 1941/42?

There will have been a current 1109 for 1941 it just hasn't been found yet.

I thought I couldn't find the right one, seems like a few KStNs from 1941 have been lost forever.
Thanks Alan.

Alan, the Protz-Kraftwagen comes up as Kfz. 69, but the vehicle I was referring to was the Steyr heavy car, this like the Protz, seem to be used in many roles including light guns and even as a troop carrier. In fact they remind me of the Dodge WC-51.

Hi Ian,

In February 1941 the HQ of the Reconnaissance Battalion in a Panzer Division was based on several KStN.

1105 - Staff (01Feb41)
1191 - Signal Platoon (01Feb41)
1181 - Light Column (01Feb41)

None of those documents appear to be around anymore. There are a series of diagrams in one of the older documents available on germandocsinrussia regarding the Panzer Recce unit. They aren't dated themselves are dated to Oct-Nov 1940 on the document information.

https://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/de/ ... ect/zoom/4

You want pages 69 onward for the Recce.
