Grenadier Regiment 1121 Sept. 1944

Post by JBL107 » 16 Sep 2023 21:21

I am researching Grenadier Regiment 1121 of 553. Grenadier Division in September 1944 in the battles around Nancy. I realize this is a long shot, but I hope members of the Forum might know the full names of the following senior officers:

Regt. CO Major Schulze
CO of I./1121 Oblt. Pflüger
CO of II./1121 Hptm Schönberger

Indeed, any information on the regiment in these battles will be most welcome.

Thanks,

John

I looked through what records I have on the 553rd for the time period, and there isnt much. I have the relevant 19th Army files and HrsGp.G as well as the US G-2 reports, as well as the US 7th Army IPW reports, but I couldnt find anything. I dont recall off hand, but if the 553 faced French units, there might be some information in the G-2 reports of the I or II Fr. Corps.

Mad Dog,
Thanks very much for looking. I found some information on the 1121 in Sept. 1944 in the 80th Division and Regimental G-2 records and from the POW interrogation of a couple of captured 1121 officers. I don't believe that any German records for the regiment in that period have survived. I'm writing an article that details a particular fight between the 1121 and American units.

Can you confirm that the unit never recieved the "Volks" prefix. I contend that some Grenadier Divisions remained that way through end of war.
Thanks,
AHK

From what I have seen, the 553. Grenadier Division became a Volks-Grenadier Division on 9 Oct. 1944 along with all of the divisions raised as the 29th Wave. The grenadier regiments never had the prefix of "Volks" added to their title.

I forgot about the 80th. I do have all those G-2 reports for Sept. except For the 26th and 30th. I cant remember if I copied them at NARA or they were online somewhere.

thanks,

Tom
