Great narrative. Just read it now.

In one of the photos on this post--by Peter H on 19 Dec 2008 17:33--one sees a rectangular shape on the slope back of the figures. What would have caused this shape? Trails? Looks to be too steep for vehicles, yet there is something "roadlike" about the lines. Just natural striations?

Great post and wonderful then and now pics of Gran Sasso.

I have always wondered why was Skorzeny dressed as a Luftwaffe Hauptmann during this operation? to blend in with the other FJ's ? The same with the handful of SS men who were with him as well all wore Luftwaffe uniforms. Why was the presence of the SS disguised, was this for practical reasons or tactical?
