Here is a death announcement of a Gebirgsjaeger who died on July 11, 1944 in Normandy.

(expired)

There were Gebirgsjaeger in the 191. Art.-Regt. (batteries with 10,5 cm Geb.H40) of the 91. Luftlande division in June 44 in the Cotentin peninsula.

Any other Gebirgsjaeger Regiment or unit in Normandy in July 44 ?

Hello

Three days ago a patient of me told me that he was member of a Hochgebirgsbataillon in the Kaukasus and got ill. He then was transferred to a "Sturmgrenadier" unit (his words) and later to the 91.LL-Division with several of his comrades all wearing the Edelweiss. Of course I asked him for a meeting. I will meet him next week. I will come back (please remind me if I forget) with the relevant info from the interview with him.

Das ist wunderbar ! I'm looking forward to hearing about the veteran's story with the 91. LLD.

gebirsjagers i thought did not really play much of a role in the normandy campagin since they were mountain troops and so they had better use in italy and the balkans

Every Gebirgsjäger had the right to retain his tunic throughout the war nomatter what other type of unit he was to be reassigned to.

Well, fact is that there was a considerable number of them in fighting units in the Normandy.

Hello, I am new to this site, I have a question I hope somebody can help me with. I am researching the battle in Lingevres in July 1944. The German force involved in this operation was the 130 Panzer Lehr Division, the question I have concerns the photographs here, which I have seen in another site regarding Lingevres which shows a couple of POWs wearing the Eidelweiss badge of the Gebirgsjager. Were they there individually as replacements, I understand they were allowed to wear the eidelweiss when not in a gebirgsjager unit, or were they part of a larger unit attached to the 130 Panzer Lehr.
I hope that is clear, and I thank you in anticipation if anybody can shed some light.
Best wishes,
Sid :milsmile:

The Gebirgsjaeger in Normandy were probably from the 2. Panzer-Division, whose rank and file were made up primarily of Austrians. The 2. Panzer Division fought in the area between Caumont and Villers-Bocage between June and July 1944. By the first week of July, Panzer Lehr had been shifted to the area northwest of St. Lo.

A Gebirgsjäger interrogated by a sergeant from the 82nd Airborne near Pont-L’Abbé or Picauville. In this area, I think that the German could have belonged to 91. LLD and in particular Art.-Regt. 191.

The two pictures are soldiers from Schnelle.Abteilung. 517 (according to prisoners of war statements).

Leutnant Raimond Steiner the FOO and commander of 1./AR 1716 had served in a Gebirgsjaeger Unit. He was reprimanded by a visiting senior officer for wearing mountain boots.

Bringing together Germans from the Banat (Volksdeutsche) and Austrians, the management of Schnelle.Abteilung.517 and a minority of the rank and file soldiers came from the mountain troops (Gebirgsjäger) explaining the shoulder insignia of some. Out of pride and mimicry, some of the young recruits did the same, as some POW's explained. For information ;
