Hello to all :D; another part of it..............

In the shade of Rommel (Im schatten Rommel) – 5 Pz Div. in the French Campaign 1940.

19 of May of 1940.

At 02:00 hours new order of the Army Corps: the Division had to gain a franking point on the Escaut’s Channel in Iwuy and reinforced parts of the Unit had to assure in Pont and Le Quesnoy. The I./SR 14 with I./AR 116 started off for Pont and two battlegroups were organized. Group North with the 11. Schütze Brigade (Oberst Angern) reinforced with PR 31 (without the I. Group), Pz Jäg Abt 652, MR. 14 (except the I. Battalion) and AR 116 (except the I. Group); the group had the task of assuring the zone of Le Quesnoy, watching the western exit of the Forêt de Mormal and avoiding the rupture of the enemy due South on the right flank of the Army Corps.

Group South, Degener Group, marching by Solesmes towards Iwuy; it was reinforced by the Haarde Group which marched from Jolimetz towards Solesmes.

At 15:30 hours the 11.Sch Brig attacked on Villereu - Postele and by 18:00 hours mounted the attack on Le Quesnoy where it was received by a strong defensive fire. Without knowledge of the division at 19:30 hours the XXXIX AK (Mot) directed the 11. Sch. Brig on Iwuy and far to the north, for that reason the offensive was stopped.

Hello to all :D; another part of it..............

In the shade of Rommel (Im schatten Rommel) – 5 Pz Div. in the French Campaign 1940.

28 of May of 1940.

Defense on the Deule channel.

At 04:00 hours the Belgians had capitulated. At 06:00 hours the SR 13, again within the 8 Pz Brig., reached Bac de Wavrim. At 08:00 hours the SR 14 with support of tanks and the I./AR 116 while fighting reached the Deule by Haubordin and Sequedin; important resistence in the factory, the embankment and the channel. The urban combats lasted all day long.

New task for the 5 Pz, the division had to assure the encirclement of the allied troops locked up in Lille along the Channel of the Deule with facing eastwards. Sectors assigned to the division:

To the south, Oberst Degener with the SR 13 and the II. /AR 116 besides an armored detachment (panzerabteilung) from Bac Wavrim to the railroad crossing on the Deule due east of Maugrèe.

To the north, Generalmajor Haarde with the SR 14 and 116 I./AR and an armored detachment, from the crossing on the Deule in Maugrèe to Sequedin.

An armored detachment acting as reserve of the division and another one as reserve of the Army Corps at Fournes in Weppes.

The bridge on the Deule in the North sector was partly blasted; numerous enemy counterattacks with tanks against the bridge in Haubordin were repelled. At 20:55 hours were destroyed eight hostile tanks when rejecting new couterattack. At 20:40 hours the CP of the Group Haarde was attacked by artillery. The CP of the division at 09:30 hours in Château the Vallée.

Losses in this day: 12 KIA and 34 WIA.

Hello to all :D; another part of it..............

In the shade of Rommel (Im schatten Rommel) – 5 Pz Div. in the French Campaign 1940.

29 of May of 1940.

Second day of defensive battles on the channel; without changes in the mission. The enemy located in the casemates, caves and wooded zone bordering to Haubourdin and Loos carried out new attacks. At 03:00 hours the adversary attacked on the bridge with tank support but it was rejected losing six armored vehicles. At 09:00 hours a cavalry squadron which tried to break towards the west was captured.

At 15:20 hours an order arrived from XXXIX AK (Mot) specifying the division had to march with the parts which were not engaged towards Arras and assembled there. The AA 8 received the assignment to reach Bailleul - Neuville to the north of Arras. The march of the division would proceed by the bridge of Billy - Berclau since the bridge in the Bassée had not been finished yet. The heavy vehicles and tanks would march by the 7 Pz’s bridge in Givenchy. At dusk the Battle Group Degener was released and marched towards Arras.

At 15:30 hours arrived the new Commander of the Division Generalleutnant Lemelsen (until that moment in command of the 29 ID Mot); Generalleutnant v. Hartlieb marched to the reserve of the OKH.

Losses: 26 KIA (an officer) and 122 WIA (15 officers, among them three commanders).

Hello to all :D; another part of it..............

In the shade of Rommel (Im schatten Rommel) – 5 Pz Div. in the French Campaign 1940.

30 of May of 1940.

At 01:30 hours an order arrived from the Army Corps specifying that the Kampfgruppe Haarde after being relieved by a reinforced regiment of the 267 ID had to block on the line Sequedín (excluded) - Lambersart - Le Corbeau (5 km northwest of Lambersart).

At 13:45 hours the Kampfgruppe Degener informed about the relief of its last elements and that it marched. At 14:30 hours the Pz Jäg Abt 53 reached Neuville - St. Vaast and the Pz Jäg Abt 652 in Bernville by 23:25 hours. There the Division moved up at 16:00 hours to Blangy, arriving around 20:00 hours. The AR 116 located due east of Arras with its CP in Monchy le Preux.

At 13:00 hours the Kampfgruppe Haarde reached the ordered blocking line. Still it rejected an enemy armored counterattack (50 tanks) due north of Sequedín with support of the 3. /AR 116 placed in direct fire. At 18:00 hours arrived the 7 ID from the northeast and relieved the Kampfgruppe Haarde. Thus the fight in Lille finalized.

Losses of the day 4 KIA and 14 WIA.
