Pz.Gren.Btl. von Schöning ?

#1

Post by Bernd R » 08 Jun 2008, 00:25

I'm looking for info about this unit - especially assignment / place of action.
Evidence of existance (unless it is an error or a typo), this German Cross in Gold holder :
Schöning von, Claus, 20.01.1945, Hauptmann d.R., Pz.Gren.Btl. von Schöning

Thanks, Bernd

Geburtsort: Suchow
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 09.09.1944

Thanks Torsten !

September 1944 and Flughafen / Fliegerhorst Warschau is a good point to go on. If it was an air crash it will get more difficult.

I'm quite sure the location was at OKECIE Airport, the today Warsaw International Frederic Chopin Airport.
With that place and the date of september 1944 it has to be connected to the Warsaw Uprising 1944 .
In the beginning of august 1944 at least, but obviously still in september there were attempts to get hold of the airport which is 8-10 km south of Warsaw centre.

There is another unit which should have been involved in these fightings :
Anerkennungsurkunde des OB des Heeres
Probst, Eugen, 27.10.1944 (4320), Oberfeldwebel, Kp. Förster / Btl. Schmitt / Rgt. Nöthe [for action 18.09.1944 bei Warschau]
According to another piece of info I once found on another board (can't refind it) there was a so-called
"Gruppe Nothe" , Major Nothe or Nöthe , consisting of
I. Btl. Major Schmidt (Schmitt)
II. Btl. Hauptmann Berndt
III. Btl. Hauptmann von Schöning

Now, the problem : ad-hoc units of AOK 9 , OFK 225, Warschau ?
subordination to any of the Kampfgruppen under command of Korpsgruppe von dem Bach ?
After a decent search there seem to be no mentioning of the above units in any of the tons of online references on Warschau / von dem Bach
example, with the basical OOB sheet : http://wilk.wpk.p.lodz.pl/~whatfor/cv_bach.htm

Anyone able to go on with the above pieces and to finish the puzzle ?

This should be solved. Pz.Gren.Btl. von Schöning as well as Kp. Förster/Btl. Schmitt/Rgt. Nöthe (Nothe / "Gruppe Nothe" ?) in my understanding were subordinated to Korpsgruppe von dem Bach / Kampfgruppe Reinefarth / (Kgr. Reck and von Rohr) during the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising.

two major awards for these sub-units :
DKiG : Schöning von, Claus, 20.01.1945, Hauptmann d.R., Pz.Gren.Btl. von Schöning
AU : Probst, Eugen, 27.10.1944 (4320), Oberfeldwebel, Kp. Förster / Btl. Schmitt / Rgt. Nöthe [for action 18.09.1944 bei Warschau]
Starting with the identification of KC Holder Heinz Herzer
further digging resultet in this result / explanation :
Pz.Gren.Ausb.Btl. 5 formed a 600 men strong Panzergrenadier-Bataillon under command of Hptm. Schmidt for taking part in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising. After Schmidt was wounded seriously Hauptmann Claus von Schöning took over the command. Also known as/called Pz.Gren.Btl. von Schöning the unit was attached to Kampfgruppe Reinefarth, within this to Kgr. Major Reck first, to Kgr. von Rohr later.

Most likely Lt. Herzer was assigned to this ad-hoc Pz.Gren.Btl.
Auch der Ritterkreuzträger Leutnant Heinz Herzer ist bei den Kämpfen um Warschau gefallen

Thanks for further and final confirmation,

Thanks for further and final confirmation,
Confirmed by Lubs' history of IR 5, Herzer was leader of 3.Kp/Pz.Gren.Ausb.Btl.5. Schöning was KIA on 9th September 1944 and his successor became Hauptmann Orywall.

Remants of this Btl. were later used to reform II./Pz.Gren.Rgt. 98.

Hi,

i have new infos about this formation.

Few names who fights under mjr. von Schöning in Warsaw Uprising 1944 (source: Combat log - Kriegstagebuch):

- Lt. Kaiser - "Lt. Kaiser schiesst sich auf Ziele vor der H.K.L. ein."

- Kp. Muth - "Jede Bewegung linken Zuges Kp. Muth unmoglich."

- Lt. Lindner

Another information - Pz.Gren.Btl. von Schöning fight (in Warsaw Uprising 1944) together with:

- Pol.Kp. Neubert (Polizei kompanie)

- Pol.Kp. Laggies

Can anyone tell about these people and formation (Pol.Kp.) ??

Thanks and regards

Seb
