I've come across this unit emblem a couple of times. This photo is from before May, 1935. Does anyone have an idea which unit it might be?

Hello all,
This shot isn't an original print, but I bought it as it might help tell part of a story. I wonder if anyone can offer information about these soldiers and/ or their uniforms? Help would be very much appreciated.

At what stage in the war did the Germans stop painting unit shields on their helmets?

They are from the SS-Verfügungs-Division, "Germania" regiment, during the campaign in France, 1940.

They didn't paint the shields - those were decals. The national tricolor shield was discontinued by the Army in March 1940, and the national eagle in August, 1943. Soldiers often kept them on their helmets, which explains why double-decal helmets can be seen late in the war.

Never mind - I just found out that it's the Reichswehr M32 sports shirt emblem, replaced with the eagle in 1935.

Could be one of the units on this page, or an as of yet unidentified unit.

I found the insignia in Die Truppenkennzeichen 1939-1945, Band 1, by Klaus-Jürgen Thies and Peter Schmitz. Unfortunately, the authors were unable to identify the unit. The insignia may depict the Köln Cathedral and the Rhine River. The 26.Volks-Grenadier-Division used that motif.

For what it's worth, here's the 26.VGD insignia that I referenced in my previous post.

OK, so I know that the unit emblem is that of the 3. Panzer-Division, but I've seen conflicting information as to when the emblem was introduced. Most say the summer of 1943, but one book placed it in 1941. Is there a more specific date? (And yes, I've tried googling it.) Also, the tactical sign is as far as I can tell that of a towed howitzer unit, but what does the "R" stand for?
