Unit emblems identification help
Re: Unit emblems identification help
Hello again all,
May I ask your help with this Humber Super Snipe? I know the photograph was taken in France, my guess (from the brick walls) is Nord Pas De Calais, so somewhere near Dunkirk and looking at the state of the wreckage, probably very shortly after the event. But that’s guess work, conjecture. Can someone kind help identify the Unit that have purloined this Humber?

Here is a shot of a captured American Hellcat, the image says France 1944, but that insignia looks more like 20. Panzer-Division, but that unit was serving in Russia at that time.
Any takers?

Re: Unit emblems identification help
That ain't no Hellcat. It's an Achilles
Source: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/track48 ... t8223.htmlAchilles named "CHELSEA" belonged to C troop, 245 Battery, 62nd Anti-Tank Regiment, RA of the British I Corps.
It was knocked out by a panzer of the 21. Panzer-Division south east of Escoville on a crossroad off the Bréville-Escovillle road on June 18, 1944.

Thanks Jpz, you are correct, I should have checked that out before I posted the photo, I just read the caption under the image in a book by late Bruce Quarrie, just goes to show that even experts like Bruce can make mistakes.
Any idea on what that emblem on the rear of the vehicle is, is it to do with the 21st Pz or British?
Yan.

Just bumping this.

Most say the summer of 1943, but one book placed it in 1941. Is there a more specific date? (And yes, I've tried googling it.) Also, the tactical sign is as far as I can tell that of a towed howitzer unit, but what does the "R" stand for?

Re: Unit emblems identification help
That emblem was introduced for 3 PD after the French Campaign and before Barbarossa, you will see some vehicles in North Africa still wearing it when the units were taken from 3 PD to form 5 Light Div. The R stands for Regiment and indicates that the vehicle belongs to the RHQ of the Artillery Regiment.B Hellqvist wrote:Just bumping this.

Thanks! Seems like the majority of links I checked were unclear on this.Alanmccoubrey wrote:That emblem was introduced for 3 PD after the French Campaign and before Barbarossa, you will see some vehicles in North Africa still wearing it when the units were taken from 3 PD to form 5 Light Div. Re: Unit emblems identification help
Does anyone know the ID of the unit that Flak vehicle belongs to? The photo also shows a column of PzKpfw IVs. I get it that it belongs to Panzergruppe 3, but what division (or independent unit)? One symbol almost looks like SS runes in a circle, while the other looks like a couple of axes back to back. No date on the photo, but it's clearly Eastern Front, and probably one of the summers of 1941-43.
(I had a thought that the emblem could be that Beobachtungs-Abteilung 27, but then the Panzergruppe 3 emblem wouldn't make any sense.)

But a Beobachtungs Abt having a Flak vehicle wouldn't make sense either.B Hellqvist wrote:(I had a thought that the emblem could be that Beobachtungs-Abteilung 27, but then the Panzergruppe 3 emblem wouldn't make any sense.)

I know, but it appears like they had some kind of Flak unit.Alanmccoubrey wrote:But a Beobachtungs Abt having a Flak vehicle wouldn't make sense either.B Hellqvist wrote:(I had a thought that the emblem could be that Beobachtungs-Abteilung 27, but then the Panzergruppe 3 emblem wouldn't make any sense.)
The 4.Ballon-Batterie was removed from the organization of most all Beobachtungs-Abteilungen after 1942, during the conversion into leicht Beobachtungs-Abteilungen (mot.). Their Flak-Zug was likewise removed.
